Same reason Batman was called "The Bat of Gotham" or "Dark Knight" at first or Superman "The Man of Steel" and Flash the "Crimson Comment" and "Scarlet Speedster"

Vivian doesn't really mean "alive" and if it's a french name then it would be "Viviane", Crimson Fox would be translated by La Renarde Rousse with two 's'.

Vivian is derived from the Latin word 'vivus' which means "alive", but hey I'd love to hear what you think Vivian comes from if not that.
Saint Vivian was a FRENCH bishop who provided protection during the Visigoth invasion of the 5th century.
The usual French spelling is "Vivien" yet the comic book character's name is spelled "Vivian". People use different spellings from different nations, language, or whatever all the time.
And finally, the French translation would actually most likely be Le Renard Roux (the actual French name for the 'Red Fox'), but again I'm using what the comics used.

Well I'm not a latin speaker, but I thought it was implied it meant alive in french. Sorry my mistake.
I can't find a saint Vivian but if he was a bishop in the 5th century then he had to be a man. And if Vivian or Vivien might be an acceptable first name for a man in France, for a woman it would be Viviane or Vivienne.
The comics are clearly wrong, Le Renard Roux is an acceptable translation for a male fox and if you want to call her like that I have no problem with it. But Le Renarde Rousee doesn't mean anything. Rousee isn't even a word in french.

We can just say that Vivian was inspired by someone they met while traveling Europe (which actually was my intent as I did go back and forth on spelling it "Vivien" as the comics sometimes flubbed and spelled it that way, but I ended up using "Vivian" as it felt more natural for me to type)
"Renarde Rousse" would mean "the redheaded Fox" though? Yes? French is not my specialty and I'm relying on Google translate here.

Yes that would make sense
Rousse is the feminine of roux which indeed means redheaded, the translation of Crimson would be "écarlate", at first I thought Crimson Fox was the English name for Renard Roux or Vulpes vulpes or red fox in english (which could be translated as Renard Rouge which is an alternate french name for this animal, he is also known as Renard Commun which means Common Fox) but it seems, unless I'm wrong, that Crimson Fox is just a made-up name and doesn't refer to any specific subspecies of fox, so the best translation would be La Renarde Écarlate if you want give her a feminine name or Le Renard Écarlate if you want to give her a masculine name.
Edit: Wait I'm wrong Crimson doesn't translate into Écarlate but into Cramoisi which is a pretty lame adjective because it contains the word moisi which means rotten. I've mistook the words because of the Star Wars comics Crimson Empire who were translated into L'Empire Écarlate.
