Description
It's a couple weeks late but hey, it didn't start to "feel" like winter until last week when we got the big freeze.
Happy Winter Solstice and first day of winter to one and all (if you’re in the northern hemisphere, that is 😉For those south of the equator happy first day of summer!)
Humans have been following and celebrating the winter solstice a very, very long time. Stonehenge was built to observe the solstices, and the traditions of Yule have been observed for thousands of years.
So what makes the winter solstice so special? Well, not only is it the first day of winter, it is also the shortest day of the year! Our human ancestors would mark it with celebrations to encourage the sun to return - because after today the sunlight will get longer and stronger until we come to the Spring Equinox, and then eventually the Summer Solstice. For early humans this was important because we relied on the sun to provide us food, nourishment, and the daylight we needed to do our work.
Winter can be harsh and unforgiving. So the winter solstice tradition of Yule was to light up the Yule Log (the biggest log we could find!) and host a days-long feast to share our blessings as a community. That celebration would give us the emotional and physical boost we needed to make it to spring.
Today we may not “need” a Yule Log, but we still celebrate winter by lighting up our homes with joyful lights, sharing our blessings with friends and family, hosting parties, and even decorating trees. And be sure to share your winter joy with everyone you can! After all, it’s tradition
