Right off the bat, what I love most about this picture is the coat. While some artists would like to skip detailing the coat, you made sure to give it as much realism as possible. That goes for the mane, too. Every strand of fur and hair is animated carefully, and I feel like I can run my hand through both of them and feel the texture. Furthermore, this picture has a good sense of lighting. You knew exactly where to insert every shadow, making it look like an actual light is being shone on Rose’s face. Now I do have a few minor criticisms. Firstly, I would get rid of that bit of hair that in the background in front of Rose’s face. It seems unnecessary. Also, I don’t like the way her mouth sort of curves down at the very end. Have it curve all the way up so that she appears to be happier. Other than that, this drawing is magnificent! I love the amount of detail, I love the peaceful mood, and I love how joyous Rose appears to be. Overall, it’s one of the best illustrations I’ve ever seen of the character! Critique? Why, this is marvelous! Ill start from the top;
The proportions, head-shape etc, are perfect. Coupled with a natural (if a little standard) pose leads to a brilliant base to build on. You have managed to make an MLP character look realistic in shape, yet still every bit as adorable as the show, and feasible to the mind's eye... Only a handful of artists can truly do that!
The fur, brilliant change of texture, from the flat "finer" furn on the face, to the more fluffy denser lot on the ears and chest. Not overdone, but strong enough to make it look like you could run your fingers through it, aced.
The big two wow factors then: the eye, and the mane! A sticking point for a great many artists, and yet you have shown us all a masterclass in both! The eye is so real, and pupil has depth and the iris has natural-looking detail. The mane is simply superb, incredible use of colour and reflections, even taking care to show the shadows under separate locks and the ear, fantastic.
All of this compounded with the lighting, the direction is shown consistently and realistically throughout, with a *slight* glow that makes this piece look like it has just come from someones imagination, not flat on a page!
If I *have* to state some constructive critique, the only thing that I can see is (perhaps even if just to challenge yourself a little more), you could add another light source of a complimentary colour and show the reflection in that to add the effect of different environments. By the sea, in a sunset, in the woods under the moonlight etc.
Other than that, you should be eternally proud of this work, and absolutely brilliant piece, that (in my personal opinion) is one of the leading examples of MLP artwork made to date!
