A floorboard creaked. Another groaned. His wife looked at him, eyebrow arched. A smile twinkled his eyes. "Go to sleep, darling. We'll be up early. It'll be a long day." At 12:13am he arose and stepped down the hall.

A Christmas tree, glittering and bright, stood by the fireplace and underneath it lay his daughter fast asleep, a glass of milk by her head. From her little hand, two cookies spilled out. He drank half the now warm milk and took a bite of each cookie before lifting her in his arms. Tucked back into bed, warm lips kissed her forehead. She never heard his whisper. "Merry Christmas, sweetheart."
