Description Scorpio

The first of what I hope will be a series of Zodiac portraits.

Massive thanks to Michael aka for kindly granting me permission to use his wonderful photo of the stunning Melle Noire as my ref pic. Here's the link to it [link]

This one took me approx 19 hours to draw.

Stats:

A2 Bristol Board
4H, 2H, H, 7B & 9B wooded pencils
HB, B, 2B &4B 0.5 Mechanical pencils
6 different shades of Caran d'Ache Supracolor soft pencils for the red
cotton buds for blending the skin
kneadable eraser for highlights

Also a quick thanks to Jeremy AKA who suggested making her hair look like a scorpions pincers.

This came out really, really good. I like that it is so symmetrical. I LOVE the suggestion you were given for the hair. That was a very good idea. I'm curious what the Taurus one will look like.

Thanks Jana, yeah the hair idea definately clinches the whole scorpio(n) feel. Still looking for Taurus, I saw one a couple of weeks ago but I forgot to make a note of it and now I can't find it again. Doh!

Thanks so much! I really didn't think I was such a creative person, I kind of rely on others for that bit. I am trying to add a bit of a twist to things now though.

Aww thanks a lot. The next one I started but it's not working, my coloured pencils aren't suited so I'll have to find some others. In the meantime I need to ask permission for a couple of other photos I've got my eye on.

HolyDemonKnight In reply to RTyson [2006-11-19 08:57:33 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome What color pencils do you use?? I need to learn more about color pencils lol
I love how close you can get to the original pictures, and at times they look like a real photograph, its just amazing!! i hope i can do that later on lol

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RTyson In reply to HolyDemonKnight [2006-11-19 10:04:33 +0000 UTC]

Well I use Caran d'Ache pencils but the picture I had started was s Merlin deviation which is something completely different from my usual stuff, but the Caran d'Ache pencils aren't bright enough, I need to find some neon ones to get the effect.

If photorealism is the way you want to go, then I think you can, I only really started trying 6 months ago, in fact, a year ago I didn't even know it was possible with pencils!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HolyDemonKnight In reply to RTyson [2006-11-30 02:16:20 +0000 UTC]

hmmm i see, where can i find some of those? I've seen your new work and truly does look amazing!! even though its not finished, just WOW!! you know? lol How do you make it so black with pencils??

Well right now im still deciding, most likely i will, but i have been thinking about going into the comic world, once i can get the anotomy right lol Wow!!! right now im just not feeling that mood of drawing i used to have, but hopefully i will get it back soon.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RTyson In reply to HolyDemonKnight [2006-11-30 17:12:19 +0000 UTC]

try this place for pencils of all kinds [link] they do stock caran d'ache.

Have you looked at any books on drawing anatomy? I saw a nice one at my library on drawing fantasy figures and it showed the different body shapes for male and female elves, warriors and dwarves etc. it looked very good.

I hope you find your drawing mojo soon.

Fantastic! It took a little brain power to put it all together--that and reading your comment about the zodiac to see it. I was lost in the amazing details before. I think you captured the idea of a scorpion personified perfectly!
