Description
The white horse in the centre of the flag is a common symbol of Kentucky due to the Kentucky Derby and the large number of horse farms in the state. Below the horse are five stars representing the Kentucky's five regions - the Cumberland Plateau, the Bluegrass region, the Pennyrile Plateau, the Western Coal Fields and the Jackson Purchase - and surrounding the horse are ten further gold stars making a total of 15 stars to represent Kentucky as the 15th state to join the Union. The gold colour of the stars represents the state flower, the goldenrod flower, while the blue and green represent the bluegrass which covers much of Kentucky. The blue border symbolises the rivers which form many of Kentucky's boundaries.
