The opening of the twenty-first century was a violent one as the relative peace that followed the end of the Cold War proved fleeting. In little more than a decade following the Soviet Union's collapse, the world was again divided into two competing camps. One the one side was a Western Coalition lead by the United States together with their European allies, Japan, India and the Republic of China, while the Eastern Alliance was comprised of Russia, Brazil, Iran, Vietnam, Laos, several African nations and the People's Republic of China.

The conflict raged for on for many years with the Western Coalition eventually emerging victorious. Russia collapsed with a newly unified European Federation and Scandinavian Republic taking everything west of the Urals and a independent Siberian state being formed in the east. The Republic of China, re-established control over the Chinese mainland, and although Tibet and Xinjiang were lost in the process, Korea, Mongolia and adjoining areas of Russia were brought under Nanjing's authority. In India, the new state of "Akhand Bharat" is declared, incorporation not just the subcontinent, but Myanmar and parts of central Asia. Tibet and Iran are occupied and a Hindu-ruled client state of Navarashtra is created in southeast Asia to provide living space for India's gargantuan population. In the north, a branch of the Indian army takes it upon themselves to free the Turkic people of Russian and Chinese influence and replace it with India's, thus creating the New Kushan Empire.

In the western hemisphere, the United States liberated the fortunate Canadians, Cubans and central Americans, with the new territories later joining the Union. Brazil also added more stars to its flag with the incorporation of the territories gained in South America and western Africa as new states. While in the Pacific, the Indonesian-lead nation of Austronesia, which had remained neutral during the war, pursued an alliance with Bharat due to their mutual religious ties and wariness of the Chinese.
