Description This probably could have better be called "Late on Kate". I had what...5 years or so to complete a portrait of Kate Austin (actress Evangeline Lilly) from the recently departed television series "LOST". But like a good diligent artist I waited until the week of the finale to start. Oh well.

I figured that this show entertained me for so many years I felt I could take a break from the digital art and spend that many hours on the sketchpad.

Call it my own way of coping with the loss of "Lost". Am I ready to let go? I am not sure, but at least I can let go of this image of Kate...

Aloha and Namaste.

Awesome! Thanks again for the tip. I have to ask you though, what paper size do you use for most of your drawings?

Most of my drawings are a lot smaller than what everyone else does around here...the average size is about 8 in. x 10 in. This last drawing, the eye close up was about 6 in. x 5 in. I think. I've tried to draw on large sizes, but I feel more comfortable with smaller sheets. I dunno why...maybe because I'm a small person and love small thin mechanical pencils! Haha...

This is great. My dogs name is Kate Austin in tribute to my favorite LOST lady. Thanks for sharing this exquisite drawing.

Thanks Jason. Kate was quite a character. Here's hoping your dog inherits all Kate's fine traits (beauty, devotion, and tracking skills) and not necessarily the bad ones (fugative, magnet for trouble, and a love of the bad boys).

Thanks again.

Thanks for the compliment. Since you haven't seen Lost, I'll try not to drop any "spoilers" on you, in case you have a free month to watch it. It (the show) was quite a ride, I'd recommend it.

Thanks again.

love how you make it look realistic, yet retain the 'art' touch. unique.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rubiconcepts In reply to subhankar-biswas [2010-06-22 14:37:15 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. I know some people strive for super-realism. It can be fun, yet when I find myself getting caught up in that battle I remember that is why we have cameras. Its fun to push yourself that way but in the end whatever the artist can bring to the image is what makes it more unique.

Thank you so much for your comments.

Vanessa, Thanks for noticing the reference . I really did want to give myself and other Kate fans a different way to remember her. And I wanted to challenge myself to see if I could create a believable portrait when vital information is missing (I used several "poor" screen captures to create this scene).

Glad you like it.

rubiconcepts In reply to Neira7 [2010-06-22 14:51:05 +0000 UTC]

Thank you Ewa. Hair is challenging but often worth the work that you put into it. The background, in this case, came from trying to compliment the lighting of her curls. The fact that you like them both makes me feel like I made the right choices in the end. TY.

Thanks Mihaela. I thought about watching again too, yet after having a month or so to think about the ending, I'll file it under disappointing.

If I ever watch it again, it will be for pure entertainment and I won't try to solve it ever again (because those writers certainly couldn't do it).

But trying was fun.
