Description Sketchdump time!
If it appears small, try download for fullview.
It is still a bunch of small doodles though.

There are so many things about this movie that is...is...
Anyway.
Just a sample of doodles done after watching it.

I won't go into a full rant.
Tidbits that I liked: some wide shots, some environments.
Some moments of acting.

To those who say they've liked it, I am envious. You've seen more positive in it than I could.

Why did you guys let that talentless bastard get his worthless hands on your beautiful series? Surely you'd know from his track record that all he'd make is crap. The Sixth Sense was his one hit wonder.

I watched the movie before watching the series, and even then I thought it was horrible! And I never dislike movies! It's what drove me to watch the series actually, to see if it was as bad as that. Thankfully, I got a lot more than I bargained for, and fell in love with that amazing story! Avatar FTW! I tried re-watching the movie after having seen the entire show, but it was just so bad that I couldn't make it past half xD

i liked it the first time i watched it, in the theater. It was mostly denial and amazement that they made my fav cartoon into a movie.

I could not get even halfway through the movie, and the Imprisoned part was basically where I drew the line. Mostly, I figure the movie was really dark. I know that the cartoon was for kids, but at least there was actual humor and fun! Everyone loved it, kids, teens, some adults, but the movie was dry, and it made me sad...

Not to mention, Aang was very depressed all the time. I understand his people were killed and he abandoned his Avatar duties, so he was guilty, but in the show he at least was still a fun-loving kid who tried to see the good in everything. It's why we loved him.

P.S. Sorry for the rant... -_-

I have this movie on DVD. Seriously. The entire "Imprisoned" adaptation in the movie is a summary on why the movie is awful. They gloss over important side characters, Aang (or rather Oong.) is boring as hell. Nobody knows how to pronounce Avatar, oh and everyone in the movie are stupid. I know the Earthbenders' will was broken, but the Earthbenders in the cartoon were at a prison. It felt like they were imprisoned and the hope and fight was taken out of them. While in the movie, it looked like they can just get out and there's ground all around them. Somebody could've at least try to fight back. While in the cartoon, they were on a metal boat in the middle of the sea. And on top of all that, how come nobody thought of extinguishing the damned fire. I mean there's dirt everywhere.

I really like this! It states the obviously wrong things they did in the movie, contrasted it with the better way they did it in the show, and you even offered some of your own input that WASN'T in the series that's really good regardless! Especially Zuko's intro, primarily your version, where he's hidden beneath his helmet, you can't get a good look at him until he eventually takes his helmet off!

Really compelling excercise you did, here! This is DEFINITELY going on my fave list!

Love the sketches.

Though yeah, out of everything, I couldn't understand why the Fire Benders had to have fire present. Sure, it could make it 'clearer' for the 'general audience' but I'm pretty sure most (not /all/, but most) of the people that went to see this movie had seen some if not all of the animated series.

Besides, it would only take a couple of lines for Iroh to say 'Remember Zuko, your fire comes from within your souuuul.' and then drink some tea. : )

Superstarsix In reply to JoeEngland [2011-09-02 16:54:30 +0000 UTC]

Well that was the guy who actually lifted it off the ground. Those 6 earthbenders you see actually made a rock shield to save someone.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

JoeEngland In reply to Superstarsix [2011-09-03 19:57:41 +0000 UTC]

Hmm... I dunno. I've reviewed that scene, and it doesn't seem to add up. For one thing, these guys are doing their little dance AFTER a wall goes up. And for another, it looks like we see several earthbenders doing the rock shield thing single-handedly at various points in the fight. Even if those guys had raised that shield, why were they still prancing after it was done, and why did it take half a dozen of them to do it? Just doesn't work out.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Superstarsix In reply to JoeEngland [2011-09-03 20:47:20 +0000 UTC]

Let's this out of the way first, that scene didn't look good at all.
The film overall made bending look less than impressive.
I actually don't know if it took one or six earthbenders to bend that shield but the villager that they saved did look in their direction which is when they started those series of moves. Personally I think they were trying to show the Firebenders that they weren't afraid anymore. People call it dancing or "prancing" in your case but it wasn't something that would look out of place at a Martial Arts tournament complete with the yell or battlecry at the end. All of them doing it together might have been to further the point that they were going to fight to gain their freedom.

There's a funny gif of Aang doing those same moves and the small rock passing by. It's actually very funny but it's wrong. When I first saw that clip I thought that it just looked strange considering that in the show, 6 earthbenders would cause some serious damage. It never sat right that these seemingly powerful looking dudes would be responsible for something that weak. The huge clue is the angle of the rock, it didn't look right considering where they were positioned. The trajectory lines up with the guy who actually throws it toward that Firebender. Once you realize that, then it becomes clearer and the scene looks less foolish. As to Aang doing all those moves in the Water Tribe city to kick up a little snow, that's exactly how it plays out. If the bending were as fast as furious in the show, that would have been the film's only saving grace.

JoeEngland In reply to Superstarsix [2011-09-04 00:15:50 +0000 UTC]

So... you're saying that it just looked like they were ineffectually earthbending when, in fact, they were simply doing a spontaneous synchronized kata to demonstrate their solidarity in the midst of battle?
I suppose that's... slightly less silly.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Superstarsix In reply to JoeEngland [2011-09-04 01:17:02 +0000 UTC]

Or a lian quan jiao, whatever the actual term is when doing Kung Fu. Perhaps if it had been cut down to just 2 moves instead of that whole routine, it would have looked better. It just didn't play well on screen and is still a source of derision for fans of the series.
