I guess i really feel strongly about the change of Asuka's last name in Evangelion 2.0 movie, so much that i need to draw this out
Why change her last name to Shikinami? Her last name is Soryu!(*there might be variation in kanji spelling)

Soryu is unique, a bit bitchy, emotionally destroyed but in same time strong, brave, cheerful and she has German heritage.
Soryu is very deep and interesting character. Her tragic past explains her behavious.
Shikinami is just the "lonely girl" type. Her German heritage is taken away, her passion for fighting also...
While Soryu is proud - Shikinami not.
In other words - I want my Soryu back.
Shikinami is OK I guess, but it`s totally NOT the same Asuka I used to know...

I know, it`s just my own opinion, because some ppl still prefer Shikinami more, since Shikinami is not as loud and bitchy as Soryu, but I personally prefer Soryu.

Yeah, you tell them, Asuka! I didn't get that, either... but Tiffany Grant, the English VA for Asuka, said it may have had something to do with the new way Asuka acts towards certain people and things in 2.0... I don't know. I'm glad she's back!

I agree. But i think shikinami is an almost different character. She had to have her personality change so she would develop faster in the movies. What a shame.

Rei could use a personality improvement. It still feels like rei, to say the truth rei does not feel so rei in the anime, the manga and rebuild changed her to act like a more reasonable human being with a logical personality for someone raised in a lab.

In addition to the theme naming, it also signifies that despite appearances she's a very different character. Lots less mental issues and general tsun, and she seems to have had a major dere transplant.

Notice this, please, as it needed to be explained to me as well:
It is well-known that the majority of family (i.e. last) names in "Evangelion" are from World War II Japanese warships. (I think the exceptions are Ikari, Fuyutski, and Ryoji, which were not WWII ship names per se. IIRC, "Ikari" means something like anchor.)
The IJN Katsuragi, Akagi, and Souryu were aircraft carriers, while the Ayanami was a battleship. The U.S.S. Langley was an American carrier as well.
For Rebuild, we add the HMS Illustrious (a British destroyer), and the IJN Makinami and Shikinami (both Japanese destroyers).
Notice now that only in Rebuild, Misato and Ritsuko's family names are the only ones associated with aircraft carriers, whereas Rei, Asuka, and Mari's names are associated with destroyers.
And so from this, it can be read as the two adults are carriers for the pilots (i.e. help them and guide them to battle), while the pilots are destroyers [of Angels].
In the series, it had been a mild gag to name all the females after warships, but they corrected this and made it a little more literal for Rebuild.

There's a slight variation on the Western spelling of her surname depending on who you talk to -- ADV used Sohryu, the original translation of the aircraft carrier was Soryu, but apparently the IJN had their own Romanized spelling of the name (that I forgot, naturally) that they felt was more appropriate -- but that doesn't detract from the fact that they never should have changed the name or, more importantly, made her in such a generic jerkass tsundere for the first half of the movie.

i know! at least in the anime Asuka is nice (or at least pretend to be) to classmates, but in the movie she's like loner
i think one of the reason behind changing her last name might be to try make the female pilots all have "nami" in their last names... ayanami, shikinami, makinami... dunno y.

Mnn-mmm. "-nami" is just part of the word that makes up the name. That would be like saying "destruction" and "constitution" are related just because they have "-tion" at the end.
