“I’m not supposed to go too far from my post which is keeping watch on you and the traffic.”

Turning towards the atrium she noticed a woman walking towards a red VW. Actually the woman was mostly starring at her. “Oh.. I’m probably blocking your way…”

“You’re that giant girl ..”

“Yeah.. it kinda sucks too. Maybe you can help” she pointed towards the restaurant’s door. “I think I got here too early for my appointment, but tapping on their door isn’t going to work. Could you let…”

“Miss Tanya” said the little man with a thick Italian accent as he walked towards them.

“Mr. Rossi?”

“I am! I’m sorry I wasn’t waiting, but we’re busy getting inside. I don’t have much time so let’s get down to details.”

She nodded. He continued. “We open at six and would like you here ten minutes before.”

“I'd be greeting people?”

He nodded and pointed to the edge of the atrium. “If you could stand on the sidewalk by that building. Is there enough room?”

She turned to look. The little women by the VW hadn’t moved. “Umm.. excuse me Ma’am.. I’m going to be standing there and don’t want to step on your car. Could you move it for us?”

“ ‘sorry. I’ll move it” The miniature woman climbed into the little car and drove off. It was still so surreal. She felt the same, but everything was so small now. How long would it take before this seemed normal again? And would the town find her normal. She walked over to the building wondering what would happen if she leaned on it. “Here?”

“Perfect! we’ll rope it off. You’ll greet people until nine.”

“That’s awfully long to stand in one place. Since it’s after six can you claim some of the parking spots here?”

“For you?”

“Yeah. Put up ropes or something. The sideway and parking spaces’ll give me a place to sit. It’d be easier to talk to people too. And what do you want me to talk about?”

“Do you like Italian food?”

“That’s a dumb question.”

He unfolded a cardboard poster and motioned her closer “Here is a menu four times larger on each side She bent down and took it from his up-stretched hand.

“Do you know these?”

“Most .. not your’s, but I’ve eaten a lot of Italian.”

“Be honest about food you like that is on our menu. You’ll get samples of anything you want. He looked her up and down. “How will you dress?”

She waved her arms around trying to shoe away some pigeons. “I was thinking this..”

“Please no! Your breasts bounce and your leg gives too much of a few with that skirt.”

“My old waitress uniform?”

“Again no. You’re not a waitress and that would be someone else’s. Summer casual like blue jeans”

She hadn’t been thinking of bouncing - not since worrying about Austin. “I have a denim suit.. It may be too sexy, but it’ll keep the girls from bouncing. Plus I could sit down without ruining it.”

“If it looks good and you don’t bounce I’m happy.. We’re putting an ad on the radio so you’ll bring in a lot of people. We want them to be comfortable around you so they’ll leave with a good feeling.”

“For Italian I promise enthusiastic.” she at swatted the damn pigeon again. She’d have to bring something to clean up with just in case.

“If we’re done I’ll go back to work” he said.

“I’ll be here before six.” She turned towards her police escort and wondered what was going through Mr Rossi’s mind. He was trying to be very professional about it, but he had to be thinking. Just like the twenty or so people watching her from the other side of the street. But finally she’d be working again even if it was sort of a restaurant job. At least she’d be able to sit down when she wanted.

She waved at the policeman and the onlookers across the street. “ ‘ready to go back”
