The thought of the look on the other girl’s faces was enough. She checked it over for flaws again and proudly walked over to the cash register. Even at that price the clerk didn’t bat an eye. Out in daylight the color was a bit different, but still close enough. I’d have to let down the hem a few inches to match her height. At least the white kitten heels should work and wouldn’t make me taller than him. I’ve gotta call my sister!

The dress alterations made it so much better. I stuffed some cloth into my bullet bra and strapped it on. Seriously - my boobs could put a short person’s eye out! Now the dress and.. wait.. So anxious to see what I look like. Putting on the makeup took nearly a half hour, but I want to see the full effect in the full length mirror.

The kitten heels slipped on and there’s the blue hand bag. Moment of truth!

“Damn!” I should felt guilty swearing, but this is worth it!

I tripped and just caught myself as the dress brushed against the mirror. Now the reflection’s gone … just some kind of photograph, except it was 3D like the movies or a ViewMaster. And I can stick my hand right through it!

It’s some kind of model like a big model railroad layout except it’s too perfect. Stepping in the light changed. I turned around, but it mirror was gone! The air smells different and it’s cloudy. It doesn't feel like being in a room anymore. There are city sounds.. horns, rumbling. And in the distance a little Eiffel Tower too! And .. my God!  Tiny people on the sidewalk and they’re running!

Got to go back Grace! But just buildings and streets in every direction. I touched a chimney and watched it break loose and crumble as it slid down the roof and crashed to the ground. My left hand is shaking now and I’m pouring sweat.

"Qui êtes-vous ? D'où venez-vous ?"

Someone’s talking. French? There's a tiny man on the rooftop. He's trying to tell me something. Maybe he can get help. It’s been so long.. c’mon Grace .. remember the phrases from eight grade French class.

"Bonjour. J'apprends le français”

I accidentally dropped my handbag and now he’s pointing down at the street and yelling.. There’s a group of tiny people standing back from my handbag. I hope it didn’t fall on anything. How do you say that in French? . Stepping to the side it felt like my foot was on a box. Then something moved and then gave way with a metallic bending sound. Like when a strong guy crushes a beer can, only more.. It's the back of a truck. A little man's getting out of the driver’s side. Thank God he’s okay!

It’s starting to rain.

I frantically felt the air looking for where the mirror should be, but there isn't anything. My heart’s pounding and I can feel make-up running on my face as I sweat. Dozens of people are yelling at me in French and a police siren - the kind you hear in foreign movies - is getting closer. And the dance is just three days away!
