I... actually have no idea. I'm only on the third route of the game, and if there is an explanation, I haven't reached it yet. While browsing youtube though, I think I found a video explaining why they have blindfolds, so I assume that it wasn't directly mentioned within the game. I haven't watched the video in fear of spoilers, but if you'd like to look it up, the game is NieR:Automata.

It is a visor, they can see information through them while also protecting them from Logic viruses. In the NieR/Drakengard universe there is a terrible disease/virus called the Red Eye virus that corrupts people and makes them mindless monsters for the gods. 9,000 years later when androids get infected by a logic virus from the Living machines their eyes go red, to show a similarity between the 2 even after millennia.
