The rumours say he was one of the first nightmares, the ancestors of the ones we know today. His big black feathered wings were lost in a fight, but nobody can tell why the death itself decided to let him live and help with one duty. The duty of collecting secrets.
Usually he comes to the dying if they have a secret to pass, yet it's possible to summon him.
There is a weird key he often carries, though nobody can even guess what it is for..."

It's a concept of a character which was floating in my head for a while after that song.

Nightmares measure years in white, grey and brown feathers only; black are this guy's only, meaning his alliance with death.
White pupils are a sign of it, too.

His wings are just bones, but he is able to float in the air.

Terrible and simple background, yeah. Couldn't think of something better.
