Description So I'm rereading the Queen's Thief series. All of The Thief are checked out so I started with Queen of Attolia.

I'm smitten with the beautiful craft Megan Whalen Turner writes with. All of the subtleties and misdirection and goings on between the lines. Makes it so enjoyable to read and reread. And then there is her hurmor and such complex and imperfect but lovable characters. I admire her alot and her books are definitely my favorite I think. I dislike this book when I first read it but that was nearly eight years ago. I think I missed the subtle undertext and was completely disillusioned that Gen would marry someone as cruel as Attolia and someone that had cut off his hand at that.

So scenes that I 'illustrated': (left to right top to bottom) These are all quotes for Megan Whalen Turner's book Queen of Attolia expect #1.

1. Gen escaping through the chimney vents.

2. "What remains of his life, he spends with me, do you understand, messenger?... I am in my own megaron and have an answer to the Thief's proposal. Do you know what my answer is?"
"Yes," the prisoner said.
"Yes," the queen repeated after him, enunciating the word clearly.

3. The magus sighed and stood up. He patted Eugenides once on the shoulder and left without seeing how the Thief's eyes narrowed, watching him go.

4. The magus turned to look for the Thief of Eddis and saw a shadow standing in a corner out of the moonlight.
"Eugenides," he said. He had recognized the voice.
"Yes."
"What have you done?"
"Not much yet," answered the Thief from the darkness.

5. ...Eugenides pushed the cloth away from the door and stepped into the tent... she could see the sword unsheathed in his left hand.
"What luck you have, he said, stepping toward her.

6. "I think," he said slowly. "I think I didn't think all this out."
"Marrying her, you mean?" Eddis sat down next to him, concerned.
"Nooo," he said, and he looked over at her. In his eyes Eddis saw a hint of something she couldn't remember having seen there before. Panic.
"I didn't think about being king,"
... "All those clothes," Eddis remarked thoughtfully.
... "People staring at me," Eugenides said, "all the time."

If you put 2 between 5 and 6 they would be chronological order.

This is brilliant, you need to make more full scene illustrations! They're gorgeous.

Great fanart! I love the first slide! He looks so cute ^^ I absolutely LOVE this books series! Though, I liked 'The Thief' better since it was written from Gen's point of view, and I loved how irritating he was too

I just love Attolia's conversation with the Minister of War. Megan Whalen Turner just has a way of making you want to reread the books again and again.
Have you done any art of A Conspiracy of Kings? I can't seem to find anything in your gallery, and it's one of my favourite books as well.

Unlike you, I'm a consistent re-reader but her books were just exceptional.
Oh, I've seen that before! I didn't know it was drawn by you, though, I saw it when searching for Queen's Thief fan art before reading a Conspiracy of Kings. Great drawing

You're welcome! I just adore the series now!!! Gen seems so awesome, and his childhood sounds suspiciously like mine Unfortunately, I don't have such a cool grandfather neither the skill! But Eugenides just happens to be an idol of mine now!!!

These are very awesome.
I think The Queen of Attolia is one of my favourite Queens Thief series because it's Gen's book of . . . uh, growing up.
I especially like the one of Gen entering the tent.
Good work.

Yeeeeaaaaah... I've got a moderate amount of Gen fanart sprinkled throughout my gallery. I guess you missed them? Haha I don't know... I'm a pretty avid fan myself. Actually I don't think I can call myself an avid fan of anything but a healthy attraction? don't mind me I'm just being fastidious. Okay. prepped for rant.

EmilyJoyfulArt In reply to Rushstarfire [2010-07-15 00:16:24 +0000 UTC]

Yknow, I bet I HAVE seen the fan pics in your gallery before, I just totally forgot. Duh.

ZOMG I TOTALLY LOVE THOSE BOOKS! I read 'The Thief' when I was visiting my grandma in ontario; I would go to the library all by myself and spend a few heavanly, peaceful hours all by myself reading Megan Whalen TurnerΒ΄s incredibly witty book. I was just so amazed at how well it was written! I was really sad, though, because I didnt have a library card to take it out, but then my grandmas neighbour, (bless her heart ) lent me her library card so I could take it out and finish it!
Three sume-odd years later, I was STILL hunting for the book, and not only do I find it one magic day, I find the whole darn SERIES!! I swear, finding the book 'The Thief' was one of the best days in my life! Ive read it over and over and I STILL never tire of it! Ive even bookmarked parts in the book that I thought were simply genius and wanted to possibly use as an example in my own writing. I know, im a nerd. Proud of it.
The thief is still one of my favorite books today, and I will continue to find it side-splittingly hilarious until I have grey hair! However, I do think the King of Attolia and the Queen of Attolia were rather dissapointing. The first person point of view was what gave Gen his own voice. When it switched to third person, the stories just lost its personality that so loved in the first book. (However, third person POV is good for going into more than one characters thoughts. ) I was sad that Gen changed so much over the course of the three-book series, and I refuse to call him 'Eugenides' because I think 'Gen' sounds better.

There. That is my rant.

Rushstarfire In reply to EmilyJoyfulArt [2010-07-15 02:50:14 +0000 UTC]

wow even prepared I got knocked over. heh heh

Actually she is one of my idols and model for writing if I ever manage to write down all those stories that ping around my head. so I can't call you a nerd without calling myself one also.

I can make no promises about the longevity of my love because my opinions tend to take dramatic reversals every several years, however; I find it is worth a reread every couple years and I have held that opinion for about seven years(I can't exactly remember when I first picked up The Thief but it was around there). So it has lasted quite a long time considering.

I kinda am intrigued by how he has changed to fit the situations and events that have been thrust upon him. Indeed, I was extremely pained that he was maimed and reverted into himself far from the clever thief he was in the queen of attolia. I was cheered in the king of attolia to still find his cunning devious self and then pained again to see his cold distant front throughout most of the conspiracy of kings. However i think that fact that she can cause such emotions about a character is a talent unto itself. And it kinda reminds me to take courage and get myself out of a situation that looks extremely like the Gen's slump in my own life. I can overcome it and rebound to be just as good as i once was and better sha! Gen does sound better I think because it fits his sneaky witty scheming side that endeared him in the first place but Eugenides fits his side that loves elaborate clothes and aristocratic hairstyles. Haha.

I answer back with another rant. ha.
