In my head canon, Nightmare Moon is a shadow demon that was willing to drown Equestria in an eternal night. T do that, it needed the night princess. Let us never forget that Celestia reluctantly banished her sister since she was possessed by NMM. What other way to send NMM to the moon?

Who says NMM needed to be sent to the moon as opposed to any other manner of stopping her that the Elements can bring about?

I'm leading towards usage of the Elements not being a controlled endeavor. It isn't your choice what happens when you use them.

Other headcanons would argue that she willingly went Nightmare Moon which thus places responsibility for her acts as Nightmare Moon squarely on her shoulders.

I don't agree with these. I'll still stick to my head canon, which views NMM as a demon. Over here, we got Jinnis. Like us, there are good ones and bad ones. The bad ones sometimes possess people, turning them into bad guys. A friend of mine has the same issue.
