Fresh from a restoration is this F-14A Tomcat, the second of three in my collection (One has yet to be built). I must have gotten this model....ten years ago or so, way back when I was a kid. Built her up, but my skills were nearly non existant, so she wasn't much compared to today. XD Got her out of the storage box, dusted her off, then tore her apart, sanded her down, put her back together and filled in any seams.

As an added bonus, I gave her 10 missiles. Yes, 10. The extra two missiles are mounted on pylons under the engine intakes. The F-14 really does have pylons here, they're the Number 2 and Number 7 pylons. They were not used too often, and when they were they almost exclusively carried fuel tanks. I've often wondered if the Tomcat could carry ordinance on them...structurally, they're capable of carrying the weight; the fuel tanks must have been double the weight of an AIM-7 Sparrow missile.
So, I figured "why not?" and I put a spare set of Sparrows on these rails, giving this Tomcat an added punch. Now, not only can she lock on and engage four targets simultaneously at long range, she can also lock onto and engage four targets at medium range.

Full weapons load out is 1x M61 Vulcan cannon, 2x AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles, 4x AIM-7 Sparrow missiles, 4x AIM-54 Phoenix missiles.

the models are cool but why have u air brushed stripes and leave some in clear plastic colour ?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Russian-Fox In reply to SindreAHN [2009-12-04 01:30:56 +0000 UTC]

The clear plastic is supposed to be the cockpit canopy, or in some instances the lenses over external lights. They're clear on the real airplane, so they're clear on the model.

Back only two years ago or so, I'd never try a restoration as I would ruin it. But now that my skills have been refined, I can restore anything I have. My Su-37 [link] was the most difficult restoration of them all.

Yeah, if I had a choice between the F-14D and the Su-27k, I wouldn't be able to pick because they're both so awesome

Yeah,.... One thing's for sure; I won't pick an F/A-18E/F, or F-35c

I hear ya. I'd rather have a Super Hornet over the Lightning II, and the Tomcat over them both.

I'd rather have the old C/D's over the supers actually.

Russian-Fox In reply to AerospacerJ [2009-09-20 06:25:02 +0000 UTC]

I can see why. The C/D models actually have better thrust to weight ratios.

Yep, not to mention they don't NEED FBW just to fly.

Exactly. When you're up at 30,000 and 500 miles from home when that happens, you'll be kicking yourself for not having an auxiliary.

AerospacerJ In reply to Russian-Fox [2009-09-23 00:28:52 +0000 UTC]

Yeah! the X-31, B-2 and soooo many F-22's were lost to this problem alone.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Russian-Fox In reply to AerospacerJ [2009-09-23 00:34:31 +0000 UTC]

Wait, how many F22s have been lost? I know one of the prototypes crashed on take off, but I thought that was the only one...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AerospacerJ In reply to Russian-Fox [2009-09-23 00:42:43 +0000 UTC]

Well come to think of it there are only two; the first one being the prototype you mentioned, and the other one being one of the mass production types. Upon takeoff it suddenly sent itself through uncontrolled maneuvers. The pilot had to bail before too much more could happen.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Russian-Fox In reply to AerospacerJ [2009-09-23 00:48:22 +0000 UTC]

Ah, I see. Never heard about the production one.

Pilot stupidity caused the prototype to crash. I saw something on TV and the pilot said "The aircraft did something weird on off, and to try and fix it I pushed the control stick forward hard".
He pushed forward on the control stick right as he passed V2 and had not just his nose gear in the air but the main gear as well...o_O

Sounds like it...
Still, you don't throw the control stick forward when you hit V2 for any reason. V2 is called the "Point of No Return" for a reason.

AerospacerJ In reply to Russian-Fox [2009-09-23 21:30:01 +0000 UTC]

Even if you manage to touch back down you'll still end up skidding along the dirt.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Russian-Fox In reply to AerospacerJ [2009-09-24 00:55:07 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, but at V2 you're supposed to make the attempt to get airborne. You should never try to land.
