In MSPA, the spade represents hate-love. Like, hating someone so much, you're actually attracted to that person and can't go without the hate.

In the comic I just mentioned, they split love into four types- Matesprit, Moirail, Auspist, and Kismesis.
Matesprit is normal love between couples. It's represented with the heart <3
Moirail (for short) is a BEST FRIENDS FOREVER kind of love, where two watches out for each others. It's represented by the diamond <>
Kismesis is the hate-love I mentioned. Hating each others so much, it's almost love, and can't go away from each others. Its represented by the spade <3<
Auspist is when a third person gets involved, and acts as the middleman of sorts so the two lovers (or haters) don't screw things up or hurt each others. Counts as love since the middle guy loves both sides so he/she helps them get along better. It's represented by the club c3<
