My 5th grade life.
And the thing is, is that I am Hispanic.
Oh just peachy.
My Dad: 89.6 percent? Β
Me: Yeah aren't you proud of me? Β
MD: Well you should've worked harder, and you could've made the principal. But you missing that one day depleted your grade!
Me: Well I was sick. And Papi, it's not like I exactly wanted to puke all over my classmates.
MD: Well sucess is filled with puke, blood, frustration, tears *Yadadadadaydada...*
Me:Β Β
(My mom comes randomly in..)
Mom: Do not do that to your daughter!
MD:Β Β She won't be like you then. She won't have a degree and stuff.
Me: Kill me now. Β

...This sh*t was just incredibly saddening. Because to some extent it is a reflection of how most Asian parent's are, especially in countries like Japan, Korea, and China. These expectations aren't that high for Asian kids in third and second world countries like Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, etc. Β I never really understood though why the parents had such high expectations unless all they care about is whether or not their kids will grow up to have a big salary for them to mooch off of. I mean half of the parents aren't nearly as smart and intelligent as they pressure and push their children to be. Β
I dont know if it's the same for Asian Americans though.
But then again, I'm black. And black parents 80% of the time could care less if their children excel or fail. We got it worse. No support at all will just means you'll go through life feeling like a failure, or you may never amount to anything. In all honesty though, I've lived with severe learning disabilities since I was 6 so my mom was just proud even if I got a C or a B. And those were rare.Β

Parents like this, not particularly Asian parents, but parents who pressure their children to do well really just want their children to do better, or get farther in life in comparison to them. (That's what I've learned from experience, at least.) Or they really just want children to be proud of so they can brag to their friends "My daughter/son became a millionaire, and yours works at McDonalds!" (For example, haha)
That kinda stuff.

UndercityIV In reply to bowkoyoko [2016-09-12 20:30:12 +0000 UTC]
Well if a parent went that far to laugh at someone's child who has to work a lesser paid job, that parent is an asshole.Β
A millionare isn't anything compared to a Billionare,Β and a Trillionaire tops them both but you can't become either of the two without scheming, wronging people, and committing "legal" crimes that the Government and Law is willing to forgive. I mean millionaires can't even avoid paying taxes, but a Billionaire sure as hell can. I don't know where you live, I'm talking pretty much about the United States when it comes down to status and wealth.Β
Money don't buy nor grant happiness either, children that grow up to be successful often walk around looking like some of the most miserable people on earth because they either have no childhood (Parent stole it from them), or they have a hard time making friends, finding a love life due to people trying to take advantage of them. From my experience, a lot of the kids I knew that were pressured a lot grew up to be miserable adults. They are successful, but they aren't happy either. Β Half of em walk around sadder looking than homeless people.Β

UndercityIV In reply to bowkoyoko [2016-09-12 21:39:23 +0000 UTC]
Well the example was serious itself. I was only engaging the conversation. I'm not someone to say "I agree" or "disagree" and then leave as that. If I took it seriously it's because you read it that way.Β

lol, no. I would Β never resort to name calling. I was insulting the people that would laugh at someone child who ends up working at Macdonalds.Β
I just never understood why people put them down so much. It was sort of like that with KMART back in the day when I was a kid people would make fun if you wore clothing or shoes from KMART or Payless.
lol and KMART was a pretty damn cool store. At least to me it was.Β
