The legendary Monkey King, Sun Wukong, who originated in the Chinese allegorical novel, The Journey to the West, in which (after spending the first few chapters talking about his birth and origin) he is one of three characters (four if you count the dragon-horse) enlisted to aid the monk Xuanzang in a long and perilous journey to the Thunderclap Monastery to retrieve a sacred text and bring it back to the land of the East and enlighten its people.

Well, it's Son Grookey, and he has a similar type of weapons as Wukong and same first name.
Plus Wukong was often depicted as some kind of monkey. Plus it wasn't the sun god in a fiery way, but like a life supporting way.
