there were more female characters in Dragon Ball than Z, I believe.

Yeah.  But like he said, there are few women warriors- the series didn't become just about fighting until Z really.  The only real women warriors I can think of (I haven't actually watched the anime or movies and have only read the manga, so I'm probably going to miss a few minor or filler characters) are Chi-Chi, 18, Videl, and... I'll toss Pan a bone here since she's canon even if GT isn't.  (Launch vanished from the series before she had a chance to become useless.)  Most of their fighting prowess is derived from male characters as well.  Chi-Chi is the daughter of the Ox-King, who is first introduced as one of the most feared martial artists in the world, and she never really participates in any of the battles against major villians.  18 is mostly alright- she was turned into a cyborg by Dr. Gero, but she held her own against Super Saiyans despite being human-derived and seems to be at the same level as 17.  Videl also clearly is mostly powerful on her own account, as Mr. Satan, while fairly strong for a human, would almost definitely not beat her in a fight.  She also didn't fight any major villians, but humans were pretty useless anyway by the time she came along.  If she'd ever fought Krillin, who is almost certainly the strongest "ordinary human", I'd have a better guage.

And then we come to Pan.  Sure, in GT she fights villians, but she's Gohan's daughter.  And it's worth noting that she, unlike basically every other major Saiyan character, never went Super Saiyan.  And why?  Because Toriyama couldn't figure out what female Super Saiyans would look like.  And yes, she's only a quarter-Saiyan while Gohan, Goten, and Trunks (and Bra, but she never fights at all) are half-Saiyan- but the fact that Gohan and Videl were able to have a child at all means that insterspecies reproduction works differently in their world than in ours anyway.

If just one female Siayan had survived Planet Vegeta's destuction, we wouldn't really have this problem.  And even in movies and spin-offs, the only additional Saiyan survivors are invariably male.

So, yes- TemBrook's assessment is fairly fair.  While I wouldn't say this ruins Dragonball or Z, it still would've been nice if female characters had actually directly influenced the plot a bit more.

Maybe in the Buu saga. I mean, Kulilin and Bulma traveled to another planet to try and resurrect their friends. Whether or not he was strong enough to do so is not really the point, but he did everything he could to save them, and she, with no fighting ability, went anyway. That says a lot. Videl showed up seven years after the androids, by that point Kulilin was older, had a wife and kid.

I dunno why I'm defending him, or anyone, but I think lots of humans did their part throughout the dragon ball saga.
