These were in late 2013.

So I love playing with icons in storytelling. Not always but when it feels right. It expands on the story while playing with design over illustration. The tiles all represent some aspect of the environment. Like the descriptive lines in prose.

It was interesting to do the research for this project. The Soweto region in Southern Africa is full of amazing history and folklore that I was unfamiliar with. Trying to figure out how to draw the shanty town in a readable way was difficult at the time and now I know exactly how to do it a million times better. But then it's tough sometimes looking at stuff even from only a few months past. You are wiser and know better now but you have to live with what you did.

I know some artists hate looking at past work because of all the mistakes but if you can get past that you can have fun looking and learning from your own work. Be judgmental without the emotional effect. Notice what is wrong but don't get bummed about it or pissed off. Be able to laugh at your mistakes. And most of all appreciate where you were and where you are at.
