harrie5 In reply to ProRimz [2013-09-06 22:01:50 +0000 UTC]

Okay, firstly! This kind of a tutorial is for people who have prior knowledge of theories like colour theory and light theory. This is a tutorial that requires analysing, which means looking at each step and studying them closely!

In the first one, what can you see? The character they are painting has very light, white hair. But they've started with a large, undefined lock of very dark blue-grey.
Why have they done this?
So that they can build light up by painting over rather than trying to work around the light.

Now study the second step. What did they do? They took a pretty large brush and blocked in some light.
What colour did they use for this step? A slightly lighter colour than the base.

Now ask this again for the next step! What did they do this time?
They shrunk their brush again, though it is still quite fat, and separated their rough strokes into locks of hair.

Keep asking yourself this while you study the rest of the steps c:

This WIP can be summarised into one simple nugget of advice: Work rough and blocky with a large brush, and gradually refine and add the details. Don't try doing everything at once!

However from the sounds of things, you do not have experience with colour and light theories. But worry not, because there are plenty of resources on those things uwu

I would advise reading How I See Colour by purplekecleon.
I would like to mention though that she is currently writing an updated book version of that, so if you're not already, you might want to follow her so you can keep an eye out for when she finishes it uwu

And after you've read that, give PSG's art tutorial a read too!

Please note that these are both long and full of a lot of information, so you will definitely want to read them a few times. I first read them three years ago and I still reread them from time to time, and I come out more knowledgeable each time uwu
Also for a much quicker read, Why shadows aren't grey is definitely worth it.

The more you study things, the easier it becomes to analyse people's work and people's WIPs provide you with valuable insights. You never stop learning!

That's exactly what I'm thinking. Tutorials would go more in depth at what's going on in each step. This, as well as many other tutorials put upΒ pretty much shows how the person progresses through their painting. Some MIGHT show the brushes used. It's interesting to see how they get to their end result but these tutorials aren't really going to further my skills as a digital painter since I'm pretty much a newbie at it still.

Β

I suppose it's more intended for people that have advanced knowledge of SAI so that they can figure out what's going on...?

Yes I feel exactly like you, tutorials are meant to be step by step with explanations and brushes, these kind (there's many like these, not just this one) don't help me progress and become better at drawing with Paint Tool SAI.

JulioNicoletti In reply to ProRimz [2013-09-01 17:55:02 +0000 UTC]

To be honest these steps are pretty self explanatory. It's not a SAI tutorial, it's a hair tutorial. I use Photoshop to paint instead of SAI, but this is still useful for me. Start off blocking in big shapes of hair, and slowly build up from there. I have to admit though steps 5-8 are pretty useless lol.
