Description There is no wind in the shrub area, but the air, being humid and warm, hums with the sound of thousand of various bugs scurrying about. It's not something you hear though, but feel it through the moisture on your skin. It's so humid and full of oxygen it's hard to breathe. The animals don't make noise when you get closer, so the place appears quiet, but in the distance you could hear a cacophony of sounds, a trut-trut-trut not too far away and a heavy flap of wings, followed by a couple of other, smaller ones, though heading in different directions.

I noticed recently I feel that a painting is complete not when all the details are perfect to the last leaf, but when I can "hear" and "smell" them as I look.

Used most of my plant brushes, stuff I've never even knew I had on this piece, just so I won't have to resort to phototexturing...

Something like 2:20 hours
Mild sampling, because the initial color range is just too wide for me to get on my own within reasonable time.

I like how you got the lushs on the trees, yo did a good job wih that, and the shadows on it give it depth, differnt layers of lush, kinda like different flavors of forest

Thanks!
I still think the midground to background is too flat, but I was too lazy after doing the foreground >_>

Another beautiful scene. May I ask where the numbering comes from? Are you the one who chose the numbers for each environment?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RynkaDraws In reply to Kenliano [2012-04-20 00:14:58 +0000 UTC]

Ah, damn I forget to add the relevance line in the latest paintings.
The numbers and themes are from #Weekly-Environment
I'm doing more than one a week though because I still got a lot of old ones I need to catch up to~

need more detailed brushes... but at the same time I'm afraid they'd make a lot of my works look the same. a dilemma

I find leave brushes hard to master, but drawing the leaves by hand is an even more difficult thing to do.
So I guess I should gather / create some leave brushes first, before I get started on the rainforest assignment.

It's definitely harder to draw by hand only, but even with the brushes, to make it look natural you just draw over them. The brushes help create textures and build shapes where your mind is too vague on what to put, but leaving them like that would be too obvious and generic.
Here, for the front tree leaves for instance, I layered in a few shadow+midtone+lighter leaves until I liked the general shape, and then went over it with a regular chalk brush to add randomness through new leaves and highlights.

Agreed, the most difficult part is making it seem subtle and fitting.

I've used leave brushes awhile ago when I was still using painter 11.
But I lost all those brushes and didn't bother making them again.
To me the leave brushes always seem to appear flat and unrealistic.
But that's something I'm going to work on.

RynkaDraws In reply to Alexvanderlinde [2012-04-18 05:41:04 +0000 UTC]

I find them useful in other things, but I only use like 4-5 out of all I have, this is the only painting I had to use everything I have because the key in rainforests is bio-diversity so there needs to be a bit of everything.

Some of my leaf brushes are good for drawing detail on rock in the right settings for instance, while others make the nicest mountains-in-the-distance, as they give the feeling of treetops.

What program and brushes for the leaves did you use?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RynkaDraws In reply to Alexvanderlinde [2012-04-17 21:11:57 +0000 UTC]

photoshop, custom grass/leaves + some custom ones from [link] and [link] and some other ones I don't have saved in my favs. used [link] too like I always do, but they're probably actually visible here, because I didn't define every single shape on purpose for the moss-covered effect.
