Reed was born in a small town up in the northern reaches of Wynsiph. His father, Sobriquet, was a well known explorer as well as a remarkable engineer. Due to the nature of his occupation, Sobriquet was often away on his job and had little time to settle down with his son and his wife, leaving Reed's mother to care for the young wyngling alone. Frustrated with his constant disappearing lifestyle, Sobriquet's wife left him and her son. Feeling the guilt of his busy career, he decided to settle down with Reed in their small abode to be a more responsible parent. In order to continue funding themselves, Sobriquet turned their little home into a workshop.

As he was once a senior explorer, he told his son tales of his adventures outside, and also taught him the basics and knowledge of engineering. Being a young, bright and curious child, Reed was fascinated by his father's tales and aspired to be just like him when he grows up. Due to his involvement and influence from his father, Reed found it difficult to socialize with other wynglings as their interests often conflict, leaving him to be spending most of his time with his father.

Sobriquet also revealed to Reed as he grows that during his career, he wished to explore the floating islands above, as they were a mystery and unchartered. It was an explorer's ultimate dream, but difficult to access it due to an unseen magic barrier and strong turbulence that deterred any possibility of exploration. However, he grew ill from old age and passed on before he could realize this dream of making an airship that could access it.

Reed, now older, wished to fulfil his father's legacy. Even though he was still a greenhorn in the trade, he was determined to make his father proud.
