Eglantine's ears perked at the sound of stomping feet. "Help? Help! I'm here!! My daddy's hurt!"

Polaris, swifter on his feet as a quad, leapt over the brush and bristled, ready to fight off any foe from his hardened training. There was, however, nothing left but the figure of a felled wyngro and a wyngling cowering over them. The white-blue form rushed over to the brown wyngro, and froze in shock--Koshari, the wyngro Noki had been looking for desperately all these months, laid unmoving as he bled over the sands.

"NOKI!" He cried out, quickly dropping to Koshari's side and feeling for his pulse at his wrist.

The grey girl rushed over as fast as she could, and gasped, though unable to recognize immediately his form. "That chest wound.."

The wyngling, in her distress, threw her little body over Koshari's. "Don't hurt Koko! Koko..!!"

Noki felt the wind leave her chest. Koko? That was Koshari? He barely looked anything like he did months ago, how could this be? And who was this wyngling?

"He's bleeding out," Polaris cried out, pinning his antennae to his head. Taking a breath, he looked over Koshari's body and then to Eglantine. "I won't hurt him," he said calmly. "He's my friend. I'm going to make him better, but you have to move away, just for a moment, okay?"

Eglantine whimpered and gazed at Polaris, moving back slowly. "F-friend? Okay... C-can you save him?"

"I... Of course," fear permeated Polaris' voice. "I'm going to fix what I can, okay?" The chest wound was deep, and Polaris' gripped his paw. How could something like this happen so close to Wynsiph? Pushing his thoughts away, he cleared his mind to hold his paw over the wound, until his magic glands glowed softly with a yellow light.

Noki kneeled down beside Koshari.

"I'm useless," she murmured. "All I have is this water and wind magic that can't even save you." Her paw gently touched his cheek, cold to her paws. "Koshari, what have you been doing all this time..?"

After what seemed like hours, Polaris' fatigue gave way and he panted heavily from his magic use. The wound on Koshari's chest folded closed, with the bleeding finally staunched. "I don't know what's damaged inside," Polaris said. "But I made sure he can't bleed out anymore. We need to get him to Dr. F."

Noki sighed with an unmasked relief. "Thank Chii'falla. That's incredible, Po, thank you. Perhaps it's best if we take him to Zagor and Miss Netty for now--they're much closer and Miss Netty can heal him as well.."

Polaris nodded, reaching under to push Koshari up onto his back and bracing the weight. Noki lifted what she could of Koshari's tail and back, so that it wouldn't drag on the ground. "Little one," she began, "Can you walk?"

Eglantine stifled a sniffle and looked up at the two adults. Nodding weakly, she padded along behind them. "I'm Eglantine..."

With a soft reassuring smile, Noki blinked at Eglantine. "I think I've seen you once at the Nook. Everything will be okay, sweetheart." The phrase seemed to be more for herself than for the child.

The sound of the coast's waves soon rushed to them without even use of wind magic, and Noki finally broke the silence with Polaris. "Who do you suppose she is?" she whispers to him covertly.

Polaris made a face, as if worried to face the truth. "I don't know. Maybe she saw what happened, seeing someone hurt would be distressing for any wyngling."

Eglantine glances up and catches them looking at her, suddenly feeling very shy. Skipping forward, she chirped at the two. "Koko's my papa! He takes care of me and sends me to the Nook and.. And I didn't.. listen to him. So this all happened." Her cheer quickly drained away, looking down at her paws.

Noki and Polaris' gazes quickly snapped to each other.

"Papa?!" said the grey female, unable to contain her surprise. Realizing how Eglantine drooped, Noki quickly added, "It's not your fault, little one. No one wanted this to happen." Noki reached over to stroke the pink wyngling's back gently, who seemed to be upset again.

Polaris nodded. "Hush, little one, you were very brave and very clever for showing us where you were. You're a hero."

The group arrived at the camp well past dinner, and Zagor and Netty was quick to rush to them and ask what had happened. Netty, incredibly proficient at healing, made sure that Koshari wasn't any worse for wear, and praised Polaris for his quick work. Zagor and Noki set up their tent for the night and helped move Koshari into it, so that the poor boy could rest until he was awake to return to Wynsiph and be properly seen by Dr. F. The night quickly came and blanketed the classes in a cold wind, and Noki, beside herself with worry, stayed in the tent to watch Koshari sleep while Eglantine nibbled food cooked by Zagor.

Noki pat Eglantine gently, as babies need to burp after eating, and found herself quickly enamoured with the cute little girl. Eglantine's eyes darted everywhere curiously as she sat in Noki's lap. Noki's burning gaze and unspoken questions would have to wait another time, she mused, as the wyngling's eyes drooped lower and lower until she was asleep. Noki, too, felt the burn of her muscles from the hiking, and allowed herself to nod off, listening to the soft whistle of the wind pass outside the tent.

Morning broke over the waves, and the soft sloshing woke Koshari up from his deep stupor. The pain in his chest was a weak ache, though his lean muscles felt as though he were on fire, probably from the strain of defending Eglantine. He took careful breaths, sitting up to gauge the damage, confused as to who patched him up. On that note, where was he, even? The tarp over him was good at dampening the light, so the faint glow of his eyes illuminated his horn and features, gazing down to his bandages.

Putting a claw over where the gash would've been, he sighed softly, and then quickly snapped his eyes wide. Where was Eglantine?

Turning quickly, he glanced to the flaps of the tent, about to get up when a weight tugged the covers to his left, giving him the shock of his life.

'Dear Chii'falla in heaven, who--!?'

If there was any moment that truly confused him since he woke up, it was this one. The one who tugged on the covers was none other than Noki, with Eglantine tucked safely in her arms. She was the visage of a sleeping angel, and Koshari couldn't help but stare at the changed girl.

Everything he had done--leaving to train, secretly asking Master Suvash's advice--was for her. For a moment, he felt as if his gash had opened again at the sight of her, his heart twisting in joy at how she was well and still as gentle as ever. The brown wyngro leaned over to gaze at her closer, tickled by Noki's whiskers, when--

"KOKO!" Eglantine's shrill cry made both the adults jump, Koshari whipping back away from Noki's face, and Noki sitting up suddenly in surprise. "Koko, Koko!! You're awake! You're okay!" The wyngling leapt into his lap and purred, happy that her parent was well.

Noki had a paw to her chest, as if trying to push her heart back into her chest. Slowly, she peered over at Koshari, and a deep crimson stained her cheeks. Koshari, seeing her reaction, tensed and blushed deeply as well.

What does one talk about when your best friend leaves for months and returns with a wyngling? Where to start...
