Description This is a Fox Sparrow (red subspecies). Much larger than most other sparrows, Fox Sparrows are not often seen off the ground, as they love digging around furiously on the ground for insects. After hearing this bird scratching through the ground and calling softly, I got low and followed it through the thickets with my ears. After awhile it came out for a brief moment and landed on a completely unobstructed perch, before taking off into another thicket. This is by far the best perch I have ever captured a Fox Sparrow on, so I was extremely excited with this image. Fox Sparrows overwinter, and are normally quite shy. I often have trouble locating them, so getting one out in the open is always a treat. Can you see why they're called Fox Sparrows?

If it's the one you posted on your page tonight, that's an American Tree Sparrow, not a Fox Sparrow.

Wonderful shot.. consider cropping off some of the bottom. Use something like a 8x4 crop ratio, might make this a stronger image.
Great background on this type of sparrow.

Thanks Don, I absolutely agree with the crop, the guys on BPN suggested it as well. I will change it.

Hmm.. Is it because of the red markings or their behaviour? They look really beautiful though.

Good pose that shows the species characteristics, Ryan.
It's great that the light was flat enough to keep the white details.
