Description
An odd and skittish wading bird of the east coast, the Glossy Ibis forages for aquatic prey in muddy creeks and marshes. This species is extremely difficult to properly photograph, as unless you catch one in nearly perfect light, they appear completely black, with little to none of their iridescent or 'glossy' feathers showing their true colors. I photographed this bird at a restricted-access Mass Audubon nesting colony, on a tiny island a mile offshore. I was fortunate enough to be doing a census on the island, counting the nests of several species of wading birds.
