all textures used are made by myself
ran a test on this piece with a brush i made
was rather satisfied with the brush
but seems like it's effects cant be seen clearly except at bigger areas
had references for the chair and chess XD
(btw the necklace and symbol on the face = 王 = king)
(no i did not forget to colour his eyes lol they are white)
okay thanks to all the slacking during this piece
(coz i kept putting it off when i cant decide the colours)
what i wanted to say about this piece is lost in the deep sea
so i'll just leave it like this wakakaka

I couldn't think of a better them for "Are you challenging me?" It's pretty much a perfect representation of the theme.
I especially love that the audience is actually the "you" in this piece- great interaction!
I love his cocky expression- it seems so confidence and perfect for this situation. Also, I'm in love with the way you shaded his hair- it's simple but the effect is really nice, you placed the strands in great positions.
Of course, I also like the skin tones you chose, soft and smooth. The way you painted the fur (and with a mouse, no less!) gives it good volume with plenty of texture.
As far as critique goes, I'm thinking that the perspective is a just a tad off. The chess pieces in the front, primarily the black pawn and white king, seem to not follow the same line of perspective as other pieces.
The guy's hand is also a bit awkward- I think that for composition purposes, you should have taken out the piece that blocks his hand so that we can get a good view of his whole arm movement. It adds more to the challenge theme because it's his move, and you don't know what he's planning (so it would match his expression). Furthermore, hands are extremely expressive so adding more body language to the piece will only boost the mood.
The background is a bit distracting and also feels out of perspective. I'm not sure if the flowery thing behind the guy is a chair or a fancy wallpaper- so it's important to differentiate that. More shading and more color variations in saturation would help. For example, if you make the background and other areas of non-interest muted, grayish colors, then the saturated parts will be the area of focus. As of now everything is demanding equal attention.
Lastly, as a suggestion to the whole "focal point", maybe blurring out the front pieces would be good. I see that effect a lot and it works wells, so that with the muted colors combo will successfully pull things into better perspective.
All in all, fabulous piece, I do love it. <3

yea i was having problems since the lines go out of the paper so it was hard to estimate their heights
(and i was lazy to take another piece of paper to continue the lines hahaha especially since sketching the chess pieces took a considerable amount of time already)
i agree that i shouldnt have blocked his hand >___<
made it hard for me to edit his hand and most of all blocking the view...big mistake XD
haha didnt think of having the BG + other areas of non-interest muted, grayish colors....
i was too fixated on having a mutual colour scheme throughtout this piece so that everything wont look out of the picture...
especially the type of lighting since it affects whether the colours of the object are brilliant or dull and grayish...
so i tried to have other areas (mainly the frontal portion) more to black and white so that attention will be more focused to the back (namely the red and yellow parts)

haha i'm a person that's rather reluctant to kill off the details i've placed in, so blurring was an option i always kicked out without much consideration

Oh yeah no problem, I understand the whole "Oh noo but I don't wanna start over D:" deal, it happens all the time for me lol.
Well, I guess I worded it a bit wrong. It's not that the BG and areas of non-interest should be ACTUAL gray, it's that the colorful colors should be pushed back in value (hope that makes sense). For example, a bright green patch of grass in the sun would look bluer, colder and "gray" underneath some trees. So that's how you make areas that are really important pop out: with a combo of value and color contrast.

great concept and good job on the self made texture(which i always damn lazy to go make lol)!!
hmm i think the colors could be better,too soft, give no impact to the illustration and abit boring.provide a light source and give more depth and more layers to it,and some lighting at the chair will be nice too.
and got alot of proportion and composition problem , the arrangement of the chess is kinda disturbing at some parts, and becareful on the hand perspective view
but after a while didnt draw, this is good oso, i like the chess idea for the theme challenge yay!XD

but i do agree that the colours could be better
i actually did plan to have a reddish ligthing on them but it kinda spoils how i want the picture to have more focus on the red and yellow while the rest more black and white
haha i also agree with the arrangement of the chess...especially the one blocking the hand (kacau me edit the handXD)...but the chess so damn hard to draw symmetrical so i lazy to change liao hahaha
will keep in mind bout the depth XD
(but somehow i'm still sorta reluctant to darken some parts up for the depth coz it makes it lose its details wakakakaaa)
