Description I closed the little book I held in my hand and chuckled to myself. I put it back on the shelf in my office and looked around at a place that I used to work in every day. The film-like light sifted through the slats on the small window high above the bookshelves, illuminating the room with a quaint, dim light. The dust from the old bookshelf swept away from where I moved the little book, and the scent that remained…

“Ah… It’s as if I lived a different life.”

I pressed my hands on the glass top of my desk. The light from the window bent within, appearing to bring the wood below the glass to a younger and more cheery age. I picked my head up and glanced around.

“Oh, I can’t believe THIS is still here.”

I stumbled over to the old thing. It was split diagonally and opened up to several shelves lined with mysterious concoctions of various colors.

I shook one of the tubes around. “Maybe a lucky fellow will want to test for freshness.”

The color was the most vibrantly alive of the row. Its iridescent gradient of warm colors coagulated with each shake. The viscosity remained the same as I had remembered it.

“Doesn’t look a day old…”

I put it in my bag and walked out the door.

I took a deep breath in. I heard a tapping at the door. I turned towards the door that led outside. The dust was kicking up from the door handle.

“Hello!? Heeeeeey!” a voice cried out.

“ I thought I let everyone back there know about… ” I pressed my ear against the door.

“Help! Help!”

I chuckled once more and opened the small doggy-door at the bottom. “Through here, little one.”

A ball of fluff jumped back. Its shaky footsteps headed toward the hand I used to hold the door open. The fearful fuzzball yelped and scurried past me.

I followed it with my eyes down and around the hall, “Woah, woah, woah hold up there. Relax! You’re fine now.” I trotted forwards with the sound of my words. Just as I turned the corner, a louder knock erupted, swirling the dust in the hall into a cyclone.

“Oh, I’ve already got it.” I raised my voice, “Sorry, we’re closed! Come again tomorrow!”

“Huh? No way, man, there’s an Eevee in there that I wanna catch!”

I didn’t bother to answer back. “ I think you mean that’s my Eevee that I want to catch. ”

I followed the tapping of claws throughout the old place. They echoed through to a room behind the main counter.

“Don’t worry, my little friend, it’s alright. We’ll be okay. I told that boy off.”

The Eevee was as pale as a ghost. It curled up in a mossy corner, shuddering and whimpering.

“I’m not here to hurt you, it’s ok. I don’t even own any Pokéballs.”

It sheepishly turned its head. “Wh-wh-wh-wh…”

“Yup. No Pokéballs. Well, at least ones that aren’t empty.”

“Wait… have I met you before?”

“I know plenty of little Eevees.”

“Wait a sec, how do you know what I’m saying!?”

“My ears are a little special.” I let my guise down. My hair flew out into a wicked jet black with red highlights. My clothes melted into the darkness of my fur. My hands sharpened out into bright red claws. “But I don’t think it’s just my ears that are.”

“U-U-UHGYEEEAAAAAH!”

“Shhhhhhh… I just said… I’m not gonna hurt you. I’m… well, I was a doctor. Why would I hurt patients that I want to heal?”

The Eevee continued to sputter and shake.

“Take a deep breath. Do one with me.”

I inhaled through my furrowed snout, letting air trickle down my throat and into my lungs, and slowly exhaled, whistling the air out like a bird’s morning whistle. My tranquility, however, only freaked the little dog Pokémon freak out even more. He scampered out through my legs.

“Crap… Stay! You’ll be alright! Just, relax!” I said.

“ What a difficult little Pokémon… ” I thought.

I heard a creaking from around the hall. I peered around the corner. “ That’s my office, I know it. ”

I opened the door and saw the little scamp gazing at my repertoire of medicines.

“Do you like what you see? I told you I had a medical practice.”

He snatched a vial and ran again.

“WOAH WOAH WOAH, BE CAREFUL!” I lunged forwards. The Eevee just barely escaped my grasp. “Agh, crap…”

There was a floppy sound that came from the small crack in the door. A yelp followed with a resounding “YES!”

“Well, I warned him.”

Then there was a crash. It was small, but it was glass.

“What the…?”

“Oh, great…” I muttered. I pushed my paw to the ground, and stood up. I opened the back door and found a grotesque scene that I remembered fondly.

The boy, no older than adolescence, was beginning his change. The Eevee stood over the cracked vial of brown substance. “ It was the least vibrant in that row. ” I noted.

The trainer’s eyes shrunk back, quivering faster than the Eevee had earlier. He glanced forwards at me. His mouth agape let out nothing.

“This is true fear. But, I assure you courage will follow. Just, try not to move, alright?”

I slowly continued to glance down with the boy’s bodily changes. His shoes melted with the dripping goo from his mutating hands. The dirt color of nature was slowly absorbing him. It reflected the sunlight with each flowing wave. It crept up the boy’s body and fully encapsulated him.

“You.”

The little Eevee’s back hairs shot up.

“What kind of petty thief stoops to sympathy as a form of attack?”

“Wh-wha?”

“You took something that could be potentially dangerous and could have seriously hurt another! In more ways than physical!”

“I-I-I-I…”

I grabbed the Eevee up from the ground. “Who are you, anyway?”

“J-jake!”

“Jake… hm…” I put the Eevee down. “ I don’t remember any Eevee siding with that Lucario... ”

“I know plenty of little Eevees, we might as well classify you all as rabbits.”

“L-l-l-like you should be talking!”

“Maybe I shouldn’t… You’re more clever than you sell yourself.”

A loud gasp broke our train of thought. “Hw… hwWHAT THE!?”

“Oh, I apologize stranger. Do you like what you’ve become?”

Jake stared into the once-innocent boy’s eyes.

“Seeing double?” I chuckled.

“I’m… an Eevee…?!” the boy shrieked.

“Just like me…” Jake said.

“It takes one to know one. Jake, did you read the labels on the vials?”

“Mhm, I knew this would help me get him on my side.”

“Jake, why didn’t you bother to ask? I would have helped you.”

“This guy has been chasing me for weeks! I got tired of it!”

“But you looked so cool, I wanted to be training partners!” the boy said.

“So, why don’t you two acquaint yourselves with one another so you two can be TRUE battle partners?”

“I’m Jake. I got bit by a radioactive Eevee, and I’ve been like this for… a while. You’ve been a pain for the past few weeks.”

“I-I’m Max… I like Eevee a lot… eheh…”

“Not bad, not bad. Well, before you two freak out, I made a safe haven for Pokémon-Human hybrids like yourself down an old path. I could go for a hike in the woods anyways, the office is in desperate need of renovating.”

I put my guise back up and walked the Eevees down the silent forest path. The branches arched over and made a beautiful natural tunnel. Petals covered the once heavily-trodden path. They drifted slowly from the budding branches. The sun shone through just like the slats in the office window.

“I remember this… ah… it’s like a tunnel of memories.”

The two little Eevees walked alongside one another.

“Max, you’ve gotta use your tail, watch this.” Jake demonstrated some sort of technique and Max tried to mirror the motion.

“Uh… now what?”

“Now, try it like that.” Jake walked ahead slowly and listened for Max’s footsteps.

“Max, step in rhythm. Have you ever bear-crawled before? It’s exactly that.”

“O-oh… ok.”

The light shining from the end of the tunnel was a lot closer than I imagined. There were the trees I had remembered. Old food cylinders were empty, tree holes were covered in moss, vines covered some of the cave-beds, the straw from the beds were missing, and some of the wood was rotted.

“It’s not as great as it used to be, but I can call for maintenance.”

“Max, I feel like this’ll be fun, now.”

“R-really? B-B-But what about--”

“Sh… The Doc couldn’t turn me back, so I have to accept my new form, just like you. We have to do this together, we’re Eevee brothers now!”

“Max, it’s alright. If you’re feeling homesick, I can call for someone to help you out.”

“M-Mr. Zoroark, I’m gonna try and play. Maybe th-that’ll make me feel better.”

“Be my guest, you two. I’ll bring out more food for you to eat. You know how to get in this time!”

“Thanks Doc!” they both said.

I watched them prance and pounce around the old little promenade made for the kids to play in and enjoy themselves. I smiled and laid back as the bright sun warmed my dark fur.

It's been a while since I've read a PHC story... have I missed any or do I really not have that much time? Anyway, this was a fun read and a trip down memory lane for myself.

the only real problem I have with the story is something I don't really blame you on getting it wrong (I don't think that's proper grammar). Jake is not supposed to remember what happened the day he got bit, I didn't really make that clear, but he doesn't remember getting bit by an eevee, also, why he turned into an eevee after he got bit... doesn't actually have an explanation, so...magic I guess, its Pokémon, what do you expect.

my only other problem is that I haven't read your newest stories, so I didn't really understand why anything was happening, but that's my fault so its not really a problem.

overall, great story, thank you so much
