I was roleplaying an abolsutely heartbreaking AU with my Vincent, in which the Tragedy of Sablier never happened, and Gilbert was the next Glen, and Vincent was supposed to be the sacrifice.
I couldn't handle the angst so I drew and wrote this to prevent myself from drowning in a sea of Gil/Vince tears.

My name is Gilbert Holcomb and I’m a baker.

I live in my country’s capital, Sablier, which my brother, Vincent.
Since birth, our lives have been hard.

See, Vincent is…special. He’s got one red eye. In my country, that’s seen as a bad omen. Thus earning him the title ‘Child of Misfortune’.
Don’t let it get to you. Vincent is no bringer of death and apocalypse. In fact, he’s quite the opposite; he’s a little ball of sunshine. Even when our mother had thrown us out onto the streets and left us to starve and die, he was smiling, he was laughing.
…even when he was having stones thrown at him, steel-toed shoes to the gut, and his beautiful blonde hair ripped right out of his skull.

Yes, we were living in pretty shitty conditions, to say the least. We lived off of what we could find in the trash and tried to make the best of things…
I mean, until we were adopted.

It was a summer evening, a cool one, at that. Vincent and I were roaming the backstreets again, searching for something to eat like we always did. We came upon a little cottage-type bakery that was producing a scent much too delicious to ignore. To be honest, I was expecting to get kicked out, but when my little brother and I appeared at the back door of that bakery, our lives changed for good.

Our adoptive mother shouted for her husband, told him they had guests. Hungry, bitty ones.

She and dad we absolutely delighted to see us. More importantly, my brother. The Child of Misfortune. They completely and totally saw through that damn red eye and saw him for the innocent little boy he really was. When they asked us where our parents were, they were no more than shocked at our answer.

The next thing I know, he and I are upstairs in a some stranger’s house, warm, welcome, and well fed. It was…a miracle? A blessing? Whatever it was, it was an act of god that we will never seem to understand. Maybe we just got incredibly lucky.

It’s almost twenty or so years later, now. In the time we grew up, both of us had learned how to bake and help out in the shop. These days we’re running it on our own while our parents are out seeing the world - and trust me, we’re thoroughly enjoying having the shop to ourselves.

We make a good team. I bake one day, I work at the counter the other. We change positions every day.
We remember our customers’ names and birthdays, so when their birthday comes, they can come get a free cupcake.
Any children that happen to wander in get candy.
We’ve sort of become a city-wide sensation among families.

I’m really glad people are beginning to see past my brother’s eye, too. Of course we run across customers who will give him looks, but hey, not everything can go our way. We’ve even got speculations that our mother - the biological one - has popped in here a few times and given Vince the look unknowing it was him.

We’ve made lots of friends. Kevin Ragnard, for one. He’s got the biggest sweet tooth in town and comes in to visit every day. He enjoys bothering me in particular, for some reason. Vincent doesn’t like him. But he’s welcome anyways.

A man named Jack Vessalius. Just like Vincent, he’s always got a smile on his face, too.

A woman named Lacie and her daughters, Alice and Alyss.

God, I can’t even name everyone.

We’re not living like royalty, no. We’re no Barmas, Nightrays, or Rainsworths.

But we’re happy, and that’s really all that matters.
