Description I don't usually do highlights of a year like many other artists do, but for me, 2019 has been a good year of animation. So, I decided to post this before 2020 hits. Here is a list of things that made the year cool.

New outfits and Contributions of Lapis and Peridot (Steven Universe)- In "Change Your Mind", it was refreshing to see Lapis and Peridot in legit crystal gem uniforms. Peridot's outfit was nice but I found Lapis' outfit more intriguing, mainly because her outfit makes her not look like a damsel in distress anymore. Plus, even if they weren't really given tasks of their own, they showed effort in assisting the main crystal gems. And I believe they played a bigger part in Steven Universe the Movie. In "Why So Blue", Lapis' new song was pretty moving giving that she has finally chosen to move forward and appreciate the beauty on Earth.

Kitbull - out of all the Pixar Sparkshorts released on YouTube, Kitbull is my favorite. Aside from the story of a new friendship between a black kitten and a pitbull, I was fond of the animation, the calming music, and the fact that we are able to see the unfortunate circumstances that brought the black kitten and the pitbull together (with the latter animal, the unfortunate circumstances explain the stigma behind pitbulls). My favorite part of the short film was where near the end, the black kitten tells the passerby that the pitbull is a friendly being. Overall, it's somewhat interesting to see Pixar create something that involves 2D animation. Another thing that should be noted is that the story helps in weakening the stigmas of black cats being sources of bad luck and pitbulls being vicious creatures. In turn, the short strengthens the fact that black cats, and pitbulls can be good companions when they are trained properly and loved well. Plus, this Sparkshort was posted a month before my trip to San Francisco, so this Sparkshort made a huge impact on me. A result of this impact was my dad and I looking for the ending scene, and as we passed by Mission district, we found it! Here's a photo of the location: www.deviantart.com/s233220/art…

Violet Sabrewing (Ducktales 2017) - While, others were happy with Della's return, I was more interested in the introduction of Violet. I don't get why people are so skeptical of this new girl and see her as someone with a flat personality. I for one think that Violet is an interesting character! Her design is nice and since she likes to read a lot, she is a girl who has the desire to educate herself in supernatural events (specifically in a logical manner), and we should respect that. Also, I find her relatable because it seems like unless she's with her closest friends, she's pretty much of an introvert, like me (also, she seems a bit similar to Dendy from OK K.O.). In addition to this, just like how her dream is to read more, my dream is to draw more (this is coming from someone who has to work from 8AM to 5PM every weekday and has Saturday classes every once in a while). So for those of you who are still not fond of Violet, keep in mind that there are other people in the world (such as myself) just like her and you have respect those kinds of people (and characters), as well as give them a chance at being themselves. And who knows? Violet will get some character development before you know it, especially considering that Huey might be the focus of the next season and he and Violet seem to have a few things in common.

Amphibia - Ever since I started liking Ribby and Croaks from Cuphead, I became open minded to liking frogs rather than just hyenas. So, when Amphibia came around, I decided to give the show a shot and I'm glad I did! It's pretty fun seeing Anne hanging out with the Plantar family as well as the other frogs of Wartwood, with the latter being skeptical of her at first but eventually respected her. Plus, Hop Pop is a suprisingly funny character to me because on one hand, he does what is best for his grandkids and sets rules for them, and on the other hand, he has his mistakes and gets carried away with them. Goes to show that even parents are foolish at times and don't always appear as perfect role models. Also, what I like about the show is that it covers two themes, which are friendship toxicity and attempting to make a family member proud, and the show executes these themes well. I can't wait to see what the show has in store for the future!

Rocko's modern life: Static Cling - As someone who was born in the late 90's, I barely know anything about the original show. Though I do somewhat remember Heffer because of his huge size. But aside from that, my memory of the show is one big blur. However, that didn't stop me from watching the Netflix film based on the show. I was wondering why it didn't just air on Nickelodeon itself, but I finally realized why after seeing Ralph become Rachel. It was kinda predictable to see Ed freak out over his son's sex change, but I'm glad he was able to reconcile with his daughter and become up to date with the times, the latter being something Rocko needed to learn. Aside from that, It was funny seeing Heffer and Filbert being fascinated with modern technology and social media. Even if I barely remember anything from the original show, Static Cling is definitely a good watch.

Janja's redemption (The Lion Guard) - At this point, I'd say that I have a love-hate relationship (with a touch of frustration) with The Lion Guard due to the constant bias on most predators (which is shown through the fact that we hardly see them eat even in their respective territories, and the fact that there are no bad herbivores) and other tough animals on the show, and the Mary Sue-ness of the main characters. However, rather than call it a bad show and consider it non-canon, I give the show a C+ and consider it canon due to Janja's redemption as well as the ships that occurred in the third season. After watching Battle for the Pridelands, I couldn't get "a new way to go" out of my head. And after all the times of witnessing Janja being greedy (which to us older viewers we can understand why),it was nice seeing Janja cross to the side of the circle of life by getting together with Jasiri as well announcing that both hyena clans would be merging as one. What makes this a big deal is that Janja and his clan are doing what their parental clan (a.k.a the clan of Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed) couldn't, which is understanding the Circle of Life. In a way, that makes up for the whereabouts of the classic hyena trio. So, I'm glad The Lion Guard concluded this way for the hyenas, and that there is finally closure for them. However, if a season 4 is possible, I hope there will be episodes featuring the progress of the merging. Then again, I don't mind if the show ended now considering that I really can't stand the bias on more predators and other tough animals, species stereotypes and lack of concrete evidence. As a result, I have moved onto other things which are more age appropriate for me. These things (Unlike The Lion Guard) contain character diversity, messages that are more applicable anywhere, proof of given situations, and flawed but more relatable protagonists. Examples of these are Ducktales 2017, Hilda, Cuphead, and Amphibia.

Spinel (Steven Universe: The Movie)- I think the Steven Universe writers are aware that people have been into games like Bendy and the Ink Machine and Cuphead (which caused those people to be interested in classic animation). Because of that, I think that's why they gave that sort of style to Spinel. I get that Spinel's previous form was inspired by Mickey Mouse, but I feel that her current form was inspired by Bugs Bunny or Roger Rabbit, mainly because of her posture and long pigtails. I'm suprised no one noticed that. In addition to that, it would be funny if her breakdown in the garden was similar to Roger Rabbit's. Other than that, "Other Friends" and "Drift Away" were really captivating.

Green Eggs and Ham - I won't say much here since I already made a review on it, so all I will say is that it's definitely the most worthy Dr. Seuss adaptation out there (aside from the original Grinch cartoon). According to some comments I read on YouTube, Ralph having a sex change made sense because in the series, he continued to feel unhappy despite accomplishments he made. But when he became Rachel, things became better for her. Also, the sex change is the main reason why the movie was put on Netflix and not on Nickelodeon.

Also, what's wrong with addressing LGBT in family cartoons nowadays? Steven Universe does that all the time, The Loud House has a same-sex couple, and even Violet has same-sex parents who might appear in the third season of Ducktales.
