Well I always loved the 'gun cutter' idea from the Eisenhorn Trilogy, a Dan Abnett series of books. small fusion core, VTOL flight capabilities - It's difficult to describe. But it isn't mine, obviously.

I love the vector control in the Boots. Six exhausts with individual Ion injector coils as thrust providers.
Central Core feeds a single Nozzle - I could try and work out rocket equations to see minimum thrust - But i can't be bothered!
Armour to match small arms /medium arms fire (sufficient to survive landing entry upon enemy positions) and that beautiful helmet you did so well.
