This is brilliant! I love the simplicity of it, and the design! Lovely colors too. I would want to be ontop on one of the mountains and touch the clouds!

Ah, I desperately want to explore this world as a game! It looks like the most fun game ever.

I think of Civilization, Black & White, Super Mario 64 when I look at this, as well as lush worlds like in Avatar, or Brackenwood, or our very own Planet Earth.

Mostly, I just have a great feeling of anticipation to explore, to see what's in that forest, around that mountain, over the horizon.

I really look forward to seeing your animation project. Good luck with that.

I also want to make this into a game someday. Let me know if you want to work together sometime.

Thank you for your comments; it's nice to have more than simple "oh, nice!" hehe you got it. I thought about the old school "world maps" that used to make me dream so much, to draw this. The point was "making you want to know whats in this world". Guess it worked for you. I remember i was 3 or 4 and didnt have video games yet and I saw someone playing "mario land 2" on gameboy. The map was so incredible, the giant turtle and all the fun stuff. Later I got super mario world and I used to spend my time cheking all the little details of the world map.

And it would be awesome to make a game out of it hehe.

My fascination with the worlds of Super Mario 64 and Pokemon was greatly enhanced by the fact that I never got to actually play them myself outside of a few very rare occasions. Mostly I saw friends play, or just longingly watched them as they studied the strategy guides for the games. Of course I never got to read them myself. It only made me love those games more.

I wonder how we could go about turning this into a game concept, and then into a real game... Do you have anything in mind?

ooh..since you make flash games, I wasnt thinking about something too complicated. more like a 2D style platform game like aladdin (on snes and megadrive, very good game, maybe you know) something fun to play, fast, with air tricks lol. I like what I feel playing donkey kong for example. it's so smooth and instinctive.

Hmm, that could be pretty awesome. Platform games are easy to make, especially with the Flixel engine that I've been using lately: [link]

If you have any more specific sketches or design ideas to show me, go ahead and send me a note. We could start getting more serious with this once we have some specifics...

The latest game I've made is here, by the way: [link]
I'm still working on it, but it's already a lot more involved than my previous Flash games. And made with Flixel.

Did you ever play Knytt Stories, by the way? It's a freeware platformer with level editor: [link]

There are a lot of levels created by players, and many of them are focused on exploration and atmosphere rather than challenge: [link]

oh i just tried it, quite nice, but i think the design isnt so yummy, is it? Do you know fancy pants? [link]
I like how smooth it is. how easy is it to make something like that? maybe less "sonic" like, but just a simple platformer with comfortable gameplay?

axcho In reply to s4yo [2010-05-30 23:20:07 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I know Fancy Pants. I like how smooth it is. N is even better in that respect. Have you played it? [link]

It's not hard to do something like that. I made a version of N on the graphing calculator a few years ago, even: [link]

haha great! I used to do stuff on my TI89 too. but I sucked. I tried N, it's pretty cool.
How long does it take to make a game like that?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

axcho In reply to s4yo [2010-05-31 19:57:30 +0000 UTC]

I would guess on the order of one or two months for a typical Flash game. Flydrill took me a bit over two months, but a simple platformer should be a lot easier, especially if you're doing all the art and world design.

N itself probably took longer, but they had to create their own physics engine, and design hundreds of levels. We can just use the Flixel engine and make fewer levels.
