The Japanese have the belief of which the persons you predestine to being united are joined by a red thread tied to the little finger. It is invisible and remains tied to these two persons in spite of the time, of the place, of the circumstances...
The thread can get entangled or be tensed, but it can never break.

This legend arises when there is discovered that the artery ulnar connects the heart with the little finger. On having been joined by this artery it was begun to say that the red threads of the destiny were joining the little fingers with the hearts; they were symbolizing the shared interest and the union of the feelings.
Even during the Period Edo (1603 1867) some women were amputating the little finger to demonstrate her love to her husbands. It was considered to be a symbol of complete loyalty.

Because of it in Japanese the kanjis of " promise of little finger " (指切り ) mean " cut finger ". The Japanese are in the habit of closing promises doing a " promise of little finger " (Yubikiri Genman)
