I know this is old, but hating a religion is not the same as hating all of the followers of said religion.

I hate christianity because it's homophobic, sexist, and makes zero sense, and in part because the fundies and extremists are incredibly irritating, but at the same time I'm totally cool with christians who worship their god and aren't sexist, homophobic, or trying to convert me or take away my human rights, so--pretty sure that sums up how a lot of atheists are.

Then you clearly don't understand the intent and nature of true Christianity. Being atheist and hating Christianity always go hand-in-hand because the purpose of being atheist is to reject God and everything pertaining to God, which includes Christianity.

Then clearly you don't understand the intent and nature of true Buddhism. Being a Christian and hating Buddhism always goes hand-in-hand because the purpose of being Christian is to reject the Buddha and everything pertaining to the Buddha, which includes Buddhism.

Interesting assertion. I'll let you know if I find someone who hates Christianity, but wasn't raised Christian, or live in a predominantly Christian area, or is full-on atheist but instead opts to call themselves agnostic.

Really, go ahead and think I'm being a judgmental and dismissive douche, but there are two types of disapproval. Silent disapproval and vocal disapproval.

Before you write a reply, consider that, if you don't reflect on it before you say it, you're liable to say plenty of things that show exactly what I'm suggesting: That tons of atheists arise out of resentment for how the were raised: Christian.

i-stamp In reply to SmoothPorcupine [2012-02-27 06:20:58 +0000 UTC]

I hate Christianity because of the bible. Because I don't believe the golden rule, which existed and was better espoused by previous religions, and two or three pages of bumper-sticker platitudes make up for the three genocides and carnage and overall amoral mess that exists within the rest of it.

What prompted you to learn all the terrible things you now know about the Bible? Did you curiously pick up the Bible one day, read a significant portion of, and decide you needed to research what resulted from it?

How is it judgmental if it's based on love and acceptance towards all people?

Sure, some of the people who practice it can be judgmental and/or old-fashioned, but those are the people. And people aren't always accurate representations of the theology they claim to practice. Case in point: Hitler/ TheWBC

Look, I honestly hate to say this, but really, all atheists will go to hell whether they're good people or not.

And I'm not judgmental. Pretty much all of my absolute best friends are atheist. Religion is not a reason to accept nor shun people. It's just, well, what a person wants to do I guess. :/

LzzleFzzle In reply to PurpleMelons [2012-02-24 23:41:17 +0000 UTC]

Are you trying to argue the Christian side? Because you're doing it very badly. She won't go to hell if we're establishing that it exists in this conversation.

*Anybody can go to heaven or hell. Christians can go to hell, and people of other beliefs can go to heaven. Where you go in the supposed afterlife hinges on your judgement, and your judgement is based on the good works you do, how you use your life, how you treat others, etc. Not on your religion. Christians do not believe this.

The religion is not old-fashioned and Judgmental, it's the PEOPLE who claim to follow it and decide to fuck it all up by being self-righteous assholes.

Don't judge a barrel of apples by the first few.

don't get me wrong; i know plenty of wonderful people who are christians. the majority of people i know are.

i've had christianity forced down my throat - been to church services, been forced to listen to bible passages - and i just personally don't agree with the religion itself. which is why i put 'christianity' instead of 'christians' on this stamp. because i don't hate christians at all.

StrawberryR In reply to sable-saro [2012-02-22 02:18:48 +0000 UTC]

I didn't realize the bible itself decided to berate you. Those are the "Christians" doing that. :\ I'm not trying to force you to BE Christian, but I can't see any reason how what has happened to you is CHRISTIANITY's fault and not the Christian's. It's like saying I hate red shirts because people keep trying to force me to wear red shirts.

Sorry if I'm being a dickwad. I'm really trying not to be. *Rubs my arm*

toonlink1 In reply to StrawberryR [2012-02-22 05:14:13 +0000 UTC]

But the bible does berate nonbelievers.

Tells em they deserve to be stoned to death.

Matter of fact there's a lot of silly things in there that apparently deserve death by stoning, so yes, the bible, and Christianity itself does in fact give off an offensive vibe

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

StrawberryR In reply to toonlink1 [2012-02-22 21:44:14 +0000 UTC]

Tell me where it says that. I really doubt it says anybody deserves to be stoned, considering that Jesus saves a woman from being stoned to death (John 8:7, if I'm correct.)
