Description Just something for a day when we celebrate and show our total appreciation for a medium-sixed breed that resembles a small greyhound, but is quite different. Today,  Beagles everywhere get their day of recognition. So, any of you have Beagles or would want a Beagle of your own? Well if so, sounds great, but here are some very important facts (and tips) about  Beagles that you should know about:

1. Beagles originated from England of Great Britain, earning the alias, the English Beagle.
2. Beagles are a small breed of scent hound that was developed for beagling, which is the activity of hunting hares, including snowshoe hare. They have also been used to hunt or flush into the guns of their masters other game animals, which includes cottontail rabbits, game birds, roe deer, red deer, bobcat, coyote, wild boar, foxes, and even stoats.
3. Beagles possess a great sense of smell and superior tracking instincts, making it the primary breed to be used as a detection dog for prohibited agricultural imports and foodstuffs in quarantine around the world.
4.  Beagles are known to be intelligent.
5.  Beagles are known for their good tempers, which makes them popular pets.
6.  Beagles are used to deter termites in Australia and are also used to detect food items in luggage being taken into the United States.
7.  Even though they are popular due to their even temper, Beagles make poor guard dogs due to their friendly nature. However, they tend to bark or howl when confronted with the unfamiliar, making them good watch dogs.
8.  Beagles are pack animals and are prone to separation anxiety.
9.  Beagles are prone to weight gain and require regular exercise.
10. The long ears and large lips Beagles have probably help them in trapping the scents close to the nose.
11. Although they lack inherited health problems, Beagles are prone to epilepsy (though that can often be controlled with medication), Hypothyroidism, a number of types of dwarfism, Musladin-Lueke syndrome (MLS), Hip dysplasia, and immune mediated polygenic arthritis.
12. Beagles live an average life span up to between 12 and 15 years.

If you're considering getting a Beagle (or any dog for that matter), make sure you do your research so you'll know what to expect and deal with and to look for one in a shelter, where there's a lot of dogs in need of a good home (not in a pet store, where puppies there would mostly have had come from puppy mills). With all that said, Happy National Beagle Day (from this cute and sweet Beagle family here).
