Wow! Just like all your underwater shots, the technique is just perfect. The lighting and focus is beautifully done. At first (looking at the thumbnail) I thought this was some kind of photo manip - it appears (until you glance again) that the model is looking inside herself, at her ribs and heart. This juxtaposition with the turtle shell is very clever! Even if you didn't intend it. The models beautiful red hair gives this photo a strange darkness, almost like blood, which contrasts so well with the clarity of the water and her pale skin.

I know this is supposed to be a critique... but I honestly can think of nothing to improve this photo! Beautiful, emotional and so still.

Well done.

wow I gotta say this is a brilliant piece. I love these underwater shots they are fantastic. the one thing here though is I dont feel like htis one had to be shot underwater, as it is a fantastic piece of photography it feels a bit unnecessary. that aside the lighting is fantastic and this is well directed and interesting, I really like how this one came out. The water really adds an airbrushed tone to her skin. however I do like this very much : ) I wonder how you made it look like she opened herself. It apears to be an item that shes holding in front of her which is a very smart idea for this affect. Like I said this was a well directed photograph and well taken, and a wonderful expression on the models part as well. the lat thing I can really say is it feels like an over use of the water mark having it in there three times. But then again with as much attention as your underwater collection has been getting I can understand trying to keep things safe from thievery. Overall I liked this. The message is clear and interesting and makes the observer think, the lighting looks fantastic with the theme of the picture, the model did a good job, and it all flows very well together!

I think most viewers can agree that theyā€™ve never seen a photograph like this before. Elena truly seized the opportunity of finding a huge turtle shell to the fullestā€”I can think of no better way to utilize such a rare find. This photograph is different even from most of her other underwater work; it is much more raw than many of her other photos while still maintaining her whimsical style. The title adds so much more meaning. With this title the photograph goes beyond simply utilizing a beautiful shellā€”in ā€œintrospectionā€ we are literally looking inside our own bodies, into our hearts, which of course, reside behind the spine and under the ribs. The dried out bones pointing right up to the young modelā€™s face provide a sense of intimacy; though the inside of the body is raw and not always beautiful, we are one with our bodies and to function happily we must love every part. Caught at the perfect moment, when the modelā€™s hair is still floating upward, the usual whimsy of Elenaā€™s work stays true, and the photograph seems perfectly balanced, with the ribs sloping gently downward and the hair floating gently up.

Well... what can i say? This is an incredible piece of work.
In all honesty i thought this was a work of digital mastery which showed this girl pulling open her ribcage. So imagine my surprise when i found out that it was actually a very large shell and pure photography.
The colour and clarity of this shot is wonderful, which can be hard to get in underwater shoots due to particles in the water. Would i be right in thinking this was taken in clear swimming pool water?
The idea behind this is excellent, and it has a very powerful impact, good work e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/sā€¦ " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)" /> I particularly love the way that the model's hair is floating upwards in the water, it looks almost like flame and really adds to the feel of the overall piece.
Im now off to take a look at the rest of your underwater gallery!

I will say first that your work is amazing! You have done so many great things under water that it seems you don't need to be critiqued. But I will do my best.
Her hair is amazing as it floats up in the water, especially with all the little bubbles hanging in her hair.
The shell was a brilliant idea and it was great to use it the way you did.
The only problem I seem to have is that the bottom of the shell is a bit out of focus and her hands do seem to glow a little too white.
But again, you work under water and that's difficult enough.
I do love how the color just pops out, especially the color of her lips. Matches her hair wonderfully. And even though the shell is a deep cream color that really isn't supposed glow let alone pop, you were able to make it and that is just impressive.
I don't know if you were looking to make this photo into something dark/horror, but you captured it in your own way. Even though everything else around her is beautiful and glowing, she does hold that sadness in her face. And with the shell, at first I literally thought she was opening her skin up but when I saw the full view I couldn't help but laugh a little. In other words, you create illusions very well.
You did a wonderful job with this. Keep it up!

As always, you've managed create an image that can make me smile using delightful colours, simple layouts and interesting props.

The crop of this image is perfect, it's nicely fitted around the figure, but you've left space at the top to see the light reflecting on the water. The background is beautifully simple, but there is enough detail there to keep you with the image, to keep you interested.

The pose and the expression is just priceless, it's almost as though she's looking down and is coming to terms with something. The hair has been positioned nicely, I know it's not easy to work with hair underwater, you need alot of control, but you've pulled it off here.

The colours here are perfect too, the blue water makes the red hair stand out, and the orange/brown ribs blend with the hair nicely.

The idea itself, and the way you've shown it, makes me smile. Usually, when we're shown art featuring exposed ribs and a (I presume...) naked model, it's usually shown in the macarbe/horror section, but the fact that you've shown this with childlike qualities will forever make me smile.

I hope to see many more like this in the future!

This is stupid. This is the worst photography and doesn't have any meaning. People do anything to call it art. This is just worthless trash photography.

Donkori In reply to artistdan [2009-06-17 20:22:20 +0000 UTC]

Why did you write that?

Do you think it'll make the world a better place?
I don't like all art, but I don't go around telling people that.

There're obviously people who like this photography, and do call it art. So do I. Art doesn't have to have meaning. How can you be so mean? It sucks to be, and you know it.

artistdan In reply to Donkori [2009-06-17 20:26:42 +0000 UTC]

shut up Donkori, stop being so ignorant. Thats fine if you like crappy shit like this. But if I dont like it I have freedom of speech to say so. So shut your big lips and keep your insults towards me to your self. Stop being a little baby.

Art doesn't NEED meaning. That's what makes it art.

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

artistdan In reply to Chintzy-Goth [2009-06-17 20:24:37 +0000 UTC]

your very wrong. Art always has meaning, thats what makes art, art. Art requires meaning to be art. Stop being so pretentious!

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

Chintzy-Goth In reply to artistdan [2009-06-17 20:26:58 +0000 UTC]

I'm not saying art shouldn't have meaning, but it doesn't always need meaning. People who say art needs meaning are very, very close-minded people.

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

artistdan In reply to Chintzy-Goth [2009-06-17 20:34:25 +0000 UTC]

thats not true. Meaning comes in alot of different ways. But if art has no meaning it has no worth IMO. Sorry if you dont agree but I dont agree with you.
