I love the lighting and feel of this piece, but I think the outside photo ruins a lot, I think a simple sky or even just warm white light would have been enough.

As I was developing the scene my plan was to make a 'Classic Artist's Son' but the laptop I was using at the time didn't let me add any finer details or any reflections or anything, because that would cause considerable lag in rendering. So it turned out to be a 'Comic Artist's Son'. If you take a look at it, you can hardly see any reflection/refraction/glossy effect etc. May be I will re-render it in future, I got a new computer now

aha got it, but the image outside is only thing I would change, cause I think those other tweaks are less important than the view outside which really stands out. Anyhow nice work! can't wait to see it re-rendered.

Nice work but I think you should work on some things to make it better:
The problem area is the window, you don`t see any visible glass or frame. The background is not very realistic, try to use a photo or a HDRI, and the white areas are a bit too overexposed.
You also need to work a bit more on your materials, the wood floor should have some reflections in it, the bricks a bit more bump.

I want to tell you something and that is , your gallery is awesome ! Love the colours and reality in your renders.
What you've said is very true, and its a long way to go for me to acheive anything close to a real render. Actually I was concerned about the factors you pointed out, before I rendered it. But my junk laptop cannot afford any of these, the program crashes. A window glass with refracted shadows, the wall bump, the floor reflection etc is way too much to ask regarding my computer's power. Thats why I decided to make it a bit colourful as you can see on the cloth, toys, cup, outside grass & tree, splatters etc and heavy editing was done in photoshop inorder to get rid of noise too.
My idea was a Classic "Artist's Son" not a Comic "Artist's Son" but unfortunately it turned out to be a comic one LOL. Thank you
