I did an interview once with the director of an association which helps homeless people. He told me that the worst, for them, is to be ignored by the people they try to reach to in the street, because it negates their right to existence. To reply or at least to give them a smile is a lot more helpful than ignoring them. They won't "go away" because you ignore them.

I think it was Daniel Pennac who once said that it's unbelievable people don't brake down crying while watching the evening news. I think it's unbelievable we don't while walking in the street, seeing people suffer everyday.
