The book didn't actually say what the meaning of life was. 42 is the answer to the Ultimate Question, of Life, the Universe and Everything. Which in the second book, is "WHAT DO YOU GET WHEN YOU MULTIPLY SIX BY NINE?" Which actually is 54. There's some complicated reason for that, but I'd rather not waste more text.
