Description So I've been out and about exploring canine groups on DA. What I stumbled across in the first group was a thylacine in one of the folders... I thought that's not right, so I went and alerted the group. They happily removed it. Then I went to the picture itself to tell the owner that it was in the wrong group and that it wasn't a dog. What I found however was this person had been told several times and their response was, "There aren't enough marsupial/thylacine groups so I had to put it in canine groups." THAT is a weak excuse. You do not create art so it can go in as many groups as possible even if it's wrong! Even in animal groups it had been submitted into the canine folders instead of the "other mammals" folders. And of course once I went on my little crusade telling all the group owners that this wasn't meant to be in there (most of them were quite happy to be informed and others even learnt something) I found a few hyenas had been allowed into the canine sections as well.

To all of you who are confused:
Thylacine - Native to Australia and like most of our native mammals, a marsupial. (Dingoes are not native they've just been here a long time so shhh.)
Hyena - Belongs to the family Hyaenidae and is more closely related to meerkats, mongoose, civets and felines than canines.

And my rant is over... I can now relax XD

Also before I get eaten by the critique people... I realise these animals are not the same size and the anatomy is poor I was just trying to make a point.

No they're hyenas. They're their own family, and they're more close to felines than canines. So they're not dogs or catdogs.Β

You are arguing over an animal, and are also wrong. A lot of animals sniff each other under the legs / behinds. They are not dogs, nor are they cats. They are Hyenas

Soooo truuuuuuuuue... *takes a long breath*

I already knew they're not canines just sharing some shape similarities to Canine family due to the evolution.
The thylacine's paws were not that very canine-like compared to canines and hyenas.

A funny Thing, that Both spotted hyena and thylacines have very strong jaw compared to kind of the dog breeds or wolves to have to begin with.
It's still a very sad thing that there are no many kinds of Thylacines and hyenas. The rest of thylacine families was already extinct, thylacine is the last member of Thylacinidae family, otherwise the subspecies of the Hyaenidae family was that very low compared to Dog breeds and subspecies of wolves. D=
Both Hyena and Thylacine could have to say like this: ''IT'S THE LAST TIME FOR ALL THE REST OF YOU, WE'RE FROCKING NOT CANINES!!!''

Yeah, it can be really frustrating. People try to generalize what they're drawing so they can put it into as many groups and categories as possible. Or, of course, it's just pure ignorance.

And, although the group owners must go through so many submissions, you'd think if you were to lead a canine group you'd know what is actually canine.

I'm surprised that thylacines where confused by some people with dogs, in my opinion it looks somewhat more feline at first glance. I never really confused thylacines what i did mix up was the hyena thinking it was a species of dog *fail X_X* up until recently :/ atleast now i know better.

The pic looks awesome it doesn't matter if they were somewhat disproportional i liked it I like their intense expressions and their body postures

I’m glad you are trying to help point this out. People mistaking animals annoys me, but it’s also pretty funny at times. One of my favorites is the time I overheard someone mistake a leopard for a tiger.

To me, the difference is obvious. I had a similar rant on why mongooses aren't mustelids for some time back, and it's related to how hyenas and thylacines differ from canines; convergent evolution. Convergence is the belief that an animal develops anatomical features and behaviour of an other animal, to occupy the same ecological niche. More or less.
One's allowed to WONDER. But one should never claim, or assume the species are related without knowing the truth. Yes, there are SIMILARITIES, but there are always visible differences to tell convergent animals apart. In behaviour and physical appearance. Even wikipedia says they belong in different families- you don't need anything more advanced, unless you're a total perfectionistic, picky nerd, like me. My own pet peeve is when people think weasels are rodents. If they refuse to accept the truth, then I won't bother. But I hope art like yours here can bring on some educational light to those who are open for it.

And reading the comments, I can't resist commenting on what you say about African wild dogs (they, along with foxes, are my favourite canine!). In Norway, we have a lot of misleading names on animals, and the African wild dog should hit the top list; HYENA DOG. Even worse would have been 'dog hyena', but it made me crack up because you mention how people confuse them with hyenas. Least weasels have it worse- they are called ''snow mice'' here. What about ''mouse weasel'', like in English? It ends with the right animal.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Saffhire-Phoenix In reply to Han-Wik [2011-01-06 23:01:09 +0000 UTC]

I did some research on convergent evolution last night and it really fascinates me. I already knew what it was but reading about it really helps me understand why such confusion with species is so common.
I wasn't aware of all the confusion with mongooses and weasels, but I was aware that the mongoose was related to the meerkat and that the meerkat isn't a weasel. Because that's how my logic works. Actually a few days ago I discovered that rabbits weren't rodents and I was very happy with my new information! I was also very happy I'd never claimed one as such XD

Thank you very much for the discussion here, it was a delight reading it! (At least the people at your zoo have an excuse for being confused about the wild dogs. Melbourne Zoo specifically has the sign "AFRICAN WILD DOG".)
