I might as well caution everyone that Neya Shiqaw is one of the few characters of mine that actually gets along well with Humans but still has killed them before (with good reason of course).

If you follow the link on the deviation page, the story on the "back cover" of the box art explains the story in brief.
Basically, she was subject to their cruelty in a not-so-new way.

Currently she is deceased, but in her life she never dated of married. She did love a man once.

Cool! I also add tragedy but only if it fits the arc and if it develops a story/character in any way. I also use tragic flashbacks, evidenced in Yoshioppo Eye.

Tragedy should be used sparingly, but I defy that because my universe is full of tragedy, and the biggest one is yet to occur.
That being said...
Flashbacks are something I rarely if ever use. Chronicle of the Size Shifter is one big flashback, a story being retold by Neya, but as far as I can tell that is the only time I've fully utilized a flashback, unless you count Selena and Zazu: In Charge with the accounts that are narrated. I think flashbacks are a bit tricky to use sometimes.

Trust me they can be, but learning about a character's past helps us answer difficult questions and help us learn more about the characters, attaching us to them better.Β

That's the truth for sure, but I try to let my characters be enough of a mystery to the audience to let them understand how alone or independent they really are. Only a few of my characters are truly the social type, able to socialize or come to terms with anyone. Neya is, but she is also aloof, like the Light Queen.

(Gala= Smexy and a big heart XD)
I will introduce much more characters and even SOME of the villains are proven to have hearts or at least did at one point, like Boas, Robbit, and Vein for example.Β

Once again, our universes have much in common!
Lius, Platinumus, Roxanne, they all have either had hearts or will have hearts. When will the parallels end?

Yay for character development!
I have a character that I'd like to introduce in the next arc. Care to know about him? It won't affect the story of Arc 5 at all.

His name is Atoji, the world's laziest swordsman. His is first seen laying asleep on a rock when his nap is accidentaly interrupted by Equinox. He decides to tag along with them for the adventure and again for Jucoi's Temple. He is a traveling swordsman looking for ways to break his boredom. He may be the embodiement of lazy but his stength as a swordsman can shatter steel and speed to challenge light.

Maybe. But even though Atoji is too lazy to work like Rip, his heart is as big as Russell's, and is not too lazy to protect innocent people.

The best swords today are made of steel, last I checked. He must have a diamond edged sword or something, because I can't imagine steel slashing through steel too easily. That's just me though.

Then again, it is a fantasy series! XD I won't specify the sword's metal because it makes it a fun mystery! I mean, what could be a funner mystery than one the freakin creator doesn't know the answer to? XD

Many have done it. Β Eiichiro Oda, creator of the series, One Piece, has a swordsman named Roronoro Zoro. Zoro at one point fights a Pacifista (A machine designed to attack high bounty pirates such as himself) which is stronger than steel. Zoro wields regular katanas but was capable of destroying a Pacifista in ONE SLASH after lots of training. Some things are better unexplained.Β

She doesn't have an updated Insight yet. She's the classic hero of my universe, the first Gluff to actually forge a working relationship between the other world and the Humans. A truly decent person, there isn't anybody that doesn't like her personally.

She seems very charismatic. It's sad that she died. I bet her and Russell would've worked well together.

Perhaps so. She died with old age and what appeared to be a heart attack. She was charismatic, but only to a certain point. She has sort of a colorless outward appearance to some.
Here, check this piece out.

Neya's life is literally one long odyssey, an epic. From living with Humans, serving in the Human Navy, being the first non-Light to be given the highest military award by Humans, and by the Light Queen, to befriending the Lights, fighting a handful of wars, being the Prime General in the Xendran World War, having an odyssey through the Phantom Realm, and even becoming the Empress of her kind for a short while. She is extremely accomplished by the end of her time.
The end of Chronicle of the Size Shifter is the most powerful ending I've written yet, One Last Adventure also had an emotional ending. If you ever get around to it, Chronicle of the Size Shifter is my best written work and you may want to read it sometime.

That only makes her death even sadder, but her legendary torch will always burn.
Some arcs in the future will be very emotional and powerful (Probably not as powerful as this though) but the end of my "big war" one will be one of my most emotional due to there being heavy hitting death and an epic battle between Russell in his strongest form and a god. After the battle Russell gets seperated from his friends and they believe that he died, driving the emotions from his teammates, his true friends, his family...

That only makes your characters more powerful in a way. It is cruel, without a doubt, but it strengthens the story and the characters in them.

That would honestly bring me to tears to write. Sozuni is a sweet and (Somewhat) innocent kitten of a girl. She brings what is rarely seen in painful situations in Sight Seeing, happiness. She has grown far too attachted to me to kill. Deaths in Sight Seeing will always serve an important purpose, but that would be too painful. It would be like you having Gala die, ya know?Β
