Story

The birth of Athan Ambar was not an expected one. Owner of Ocean View Equestrian Center, Jay Riddle, accepted the lease of his horse, Dúlin Wen, to the grand Trakehner stallion Erlkönig EDS. It was there that the mare gave birth to twins, OVEC Luscinia EDS and OVEC Athan Ambar.

Shocked by these turn of events, staff at OVEC quickly made plans to purchase the little colt from Elbdale.

Ocean View Equestrian Center was a successful farm by this time. Focusing upon the Trakehner breed, it was quickly trying to rise to the top in the European show circuit. Athan Ambar would be the first of his breed born on stable grounds. Staff were excited, especially the eldest daughter of Mr. Riddle, Cadence. She was the main rider for the international events and she couldn't wait to get her hands on the young colt.

Training started out for Athan Ambar like any other horse. First came socialization towards people, then came the tests. The rambunctious colt was spirited and full of himself, making it hard for people to calm him for work. It was as though he was bored with the ground work. Bridling and saddling him had been easy. Getting a rider on his back? Piece of cake. Getting him to work for an hour in an arena practicing simple figures? Impossible.

Throughout these issues, the colt was sent to performance shows. He had a fantastic build and was the favorite in every class he was entered in. Rising from a gangly youngster, he was filling out and maturing over a rapid period of time.

Athan Ambar was built and bred for the three-day-event. He was fit and aggressive in his actions and the arena seemed to bore him. Cadence, one who had first championed the youngster, now dreaded her rides with him. Staff didn't know what to do. They knew he had potential but they just couldn't seem to unlock it. It was then that Robert Conner Moore, an Irishman and longtime friend of Jay Riddle, arrived at the farm.

He at once saw the problems with the young Trakehner and opted to take over his training. Things started to fall into place. What had been the problems? He would never tell. Athan Ambar began to excel at Dressage training and wiped the floor at his first competition. It was obvious that he loved the attention as cameras snapped at him from all directions. His score of 93% for his first time was outstanding and others seemed to catch onto the true worth of the brute.

Sales offers began coming in when the colt began work on the cross country courses. His times were always good and it seemed like it'd be hard to deter him from any obstacle.

Mr. Moore, however, was concerned. The youngster was over jumping everything in his path. Even in classes with jumps that a human could step over the horse was taking them in leaps and bounds. It was not a graceful thing to watch and there was a danger of a misstep due to overexcitement. Nothing seemed to calm him, no matter what they tried.

Years passed and the young stallion grew in height and bulk, standing at a spectacular 17.3 hands at the age of 6. Mr. Riddle had just passed away and Robert took over ownership of the farm and private ownership of Athan Ambar.

It was becoming apparent that the stallion was getting bored with the jumping thing. He was still hopping over fences with far too much spirit and had dislodged his rider a few times upon landing. There was no way he could reach the big leagues of the show world with such high risk behavior.

Mr. Moore decided to set up a test, a theory having been formulating in his mind ever since those early years of competition.

Staff lowered a rail on the Trakehner's paddock so that the height was a whopping 5 feet... daunting but jumpable. The stallion was led in and released as though it were any other day. Everyone moved out of sight so that they could watch his actions.

Athan Ambar noticed the lowered bar. Robert had to hold back a chuckle as the Trakehner took off for the fence. He jumped it easily, body fluid and graceful for the first time while taking an obstacle.

They had their answer.

Ocean View staff ended three day event training and began to focus upon the show jumping ring. Jumps were raised in height and Robert took over riding him at all times. The stallion was still rambunctious and needed a firm hand but he soared over each and every jump.

They continued to raise the height. He continued to excel over each obstacle.

It was time to try him out in a high stakes show. Entering him into two classes that would prove too difficult did the trick. Placing low in the competition showed Athan Ambar that he needed to focus himself and get his act together.

Leaving that competition proved successful in other ways. The next few competitions saw victories and good placings.

People seemed to love the stallion but Moore wanted the horse to prove to the world that he had the potential to be a champion. The 2010 Olympics were coming up and he made sure to get his horse qualified for the event. Once that position was secured, training began... every morning, six days a week for several weeks. The work paid off.

OVEC Athan Ambar stunned the crowds when he jumped his way to a silver medal at the Olympic Games in the Show Jumping event. Pleased with this result, staff immediately entered him in a Dressage competition at Dane Stables to change things up a bit and then at another Show Jumping event at the Royal Zakharov Stables soon after.

Some people may still question this stallion's talent but at the young age of 8, he has already fulfilled the ambitious goals of his owner. Who knows what will come in the years ahead...
