Jeanne d'Arc, commonly known in English as Joan of Arc, was a medieval French military leader and a national heroine. She was born around 1412 in Domrémy, a village in northeastern France. Joan of Arc is best known for her role in the Hundred Years' War between England and France.
During the war, Joan claimed to have received divine visions and messages from saints, including Saint Michael, Saint Catherine, and Saint Margaret. These visions instructed her to support Charles VII, the Dauphin (heir to the French throne), and assist him in claiming his rightful position as king of France.
Joan of Arc dressed in armor and presented herself to Charles VII, convincing him of her divine mission. She played a significant role in military campaigns, most notably the lifting of the siege of Orléans in 1429, which is considered a turning point in the war. Her leadership and courage inspired the French troops, and her actions helped boost French morale.
However, in 1430, Joan was captured by the Burgundians (allied with the English) and eventually handed over to the English. She was put on trial by an ecclesiastical court on charges of heresy and witchcraft. Despite her remarkable achievements, she was found guilty and sentenced to death. In 1431, at the age of 19, Joan of Arc was burned at the stake in Rouen, a city held by the English.
Decades later, in 1456, a posthumous retrial overturned her conviction, and she was declared a martyr and a saint by the Roman Catholic Church.
