Description Today would have been my Brandy's 33rd birthday, although sadly, she left me eleven months ago (though I have not felt like sharing this until now).  It hardly seems that it could have been that long, but it was only when her birthday 'event' reminder popped up on my computer screen this evening, that it really hit me how much time had actually passed since her birth in my barn all those years ago, to now.  You see, she was a gift from my parents for my sixth birthday - my baby girl, right from the start.

I took this photo the morning before she died (it was planned - congestive heart failure was taking her), and miraculously, I found a copy of this very picture, framed, and in my kitchen that evening when I finally made it home.  My good friend (he's one in a million, of this, I'm sure), who was with me at her end, and with whom I had shared the photo, had managed to sneak into my kitchen to leave it for me as a surprise - much needed after such a day.  I had no idea until I walked in and saw her.  Although I have told him how much it has meant to me, I really don't think I can ever truly express it. Thank you, just doesn't seem enough

I rode quite a bit more than 20 years ago and I still remember those horses and their personalities. So it makes complete sense that you should have been so pleased with this picture - what a lovely thought.

I certainly hear that!  We board horses, as well, and I get attached to those guys, too, just as if they were mine.  Fortunately, our boarders tend to stay with us so I don't have to see their boys and girls leave very often.  32yrs is a long time, but you what was the longest?  Brandy was a present, as I said, from my parents for my sixth birthday......  My birthday is February 15, so I had to wait all the way until July 22 for my present.  Gotta tell you, I still remember those being the longest five months of my life, but she was totally worth the wait   Thanks so much for the kind words, though.  They really do mean a lot to me

I know how u feel, i usually get attached sooner to animals then people
Sounds great, Canada is beautiful, when u live in the 4th most densly populated country there isnt much room to hold horses,
besides my parents didnt even send a postcard for my birthday, let allone a horse
i worked for 2years at the ridingschool, harnassed them, cleaning stables, hoofs etc & riding on the beach & forrest
but that was long enough to miss them
ofcourse its the least i can do, i lost a few cats in my life, its like losing a family member
but im shure we are both gratefull for the quality time we had with them

I agree.  Animals are easy to love - more so then people, so instant attachments happen!  That's really cool that you spent some time working with horses.  I can't imagine my life without that - but then that's what I've always known, so perspective, and all that   they definitely are family, and yeah, I am thankful for all the quality time I get to spend with them. I know you know what I mean   I do my best not to take it all for granted.

She's with my favorite lesson horse I first learned to ride on and with my old barn owner/riding instructor's 36 year old gelding who had a spring in his step even up to his death. Horses always have a place in our hearts.

My condolences for your loss,  I know the loss of close friends (though in my case they are dogs and cats), they are more a part of the family than was some people think.  You have a great remembrance of her.

I hear that! They never leave after they pass.....My last Great Dane that I had to put down (here at home) in 07, still fresh in my mind. They become part of you, no doubt. I wasn't aware of a Horses life span, she seems to be long lived? No?

Saidge42 In reply to wolfsbane6 [2016-07-23 17:00:35 +0000 UTC]

indeed, they never leave us   I lost my gelding in 07 as well, and truly I feel him just as keenly as I did when he was alive  as for being long-lived she was, yes, but it isn't uncommon for horses to live late into the their thirties.  As with people, all horses age differently, and a big part of it is how we treat them.  Medical issues notwithstanding, if we treat them as if they are old, then they will become old.  I've had many a school horse live quite brilliantly up into their late thirties, still work daily (although tailored to their needs), and act more like ten-year-olds then thirty somethings

Very cool to know, wasn't aware of lifespan. Incredible! I would have guessed 20-25 years in my ignorance lol. Yes, I'm sure the way they are treated really relates to thier longevity. Thats awesome you are able to own horses, amazing animals.

Not ignorance at all! I mean unless you have a reason to know it, most don't.  Not a big deal.  And yes, they truly are amazing animals, and it is very awesome to have them.  I grew up on my family's riding stable (still there working everyday), so I honestly can't imagine life without them.  It made for a ridiculously cool childhood

Nice, to grow up with that around and still be working the stable. I know, it's like second nature to you, very cool! My Mother and Sister did the riding and lessons some time ago, I've even riden two or three times

well there you go! and yeah, it is cool.  They are all so unique and totally individual - that's why they become family.  They are a lot like kids....... 1000lb kids, but kids nonetheless   I guess I run a giant daycare, lol

She was n is an extension of you. She will always remain in your heart. That is how it is when you let someone in your heart unconditionally. Am sure Brandy knew too. A lucky n happy horse.
Same with my sis n her daughter, her dog who lived longer than she was meant to. Passed away on top of her fav resting place.
So don't be too sad, be happy too for she was with you.
