Normally I imagine him comforting her, but this is a nice alternative. She truly loves him for who he is, not ignoring his imperfections. She excepts him for all his faults, not ignoring them, to her they are just a part of the whole. Naruto being a character with a rather lonely or harsh background would most likely flourish under this form of attention.
His line "I thought you were dark and weird, but I like people like you" I interpret this as, you're not perfect but i accept and like you for you. True his interactions through cannon were somewhat sparse, the symbolism behind it all proves that he deeply cares for her.
