The only way that I know how to make sure that I have smooth edges and haven't missed any small pieces is to look at the cut out image on different colored backgrounds and stroking the image so that it shows me the small dots I have missed. There are probably other ways to make sure you catch all the little pieces, this is just how I know how to.
