Description It's no secret that Sailor Moon is my all time favorite series. From it's great stories to amazing characters this show is just amazing. Sure it's animation is a bit dated, but it's much better than that of the reboot's. Yes, the transformations and fights use tons of stock footage, but here is the thing. The show is not meant to be a big spectacle of amazing fights the way DBZ is. Instead this show is more character focused and as a result created some of the greatest characters of all time, one of which is the lead character herself, Usagi Tsukino.

Usagi is a regular teenage girl living in Tokyo Japan, having troubles with he grades due to being a rather ditsy individual. However, while her daily life seems to be normal, she has an incredible destiny. You see, she is actually the reincarnation of a long lost princess of the Moon Kingdom, and as a result has a vast amount of untapped magical powers. Usagi one day on her way to school meets a cat named Luna who was being picked on by some punk kids. The kids had put some bandages on the cat's forehead revealing a crescent moon shaped spot on it's head. After school that day she again met the cat upon getting home, and the cat gave her a broach that allows her to transform into a magical girl superhero named Sailor Moon. Usagi is very reluctant to fight monsters due to being a crybaby but is not letting that stop her. That is a really admirable trait of her's and one people can look up to. Despite her fears she is still willing to fight these monsters to protect the universe from harm.

As time went on she began to find the reincarnations of Serenity's protectors. Ami Mizuno was the first, who was a shy and timid bookworm, who Usagi helped come out of her shell. Then their is Rei Hino who she has a rivalry with, and even then they deeply care for each other. Makoto Kino is a bit like a big sister to her, and then there is Minako Aino, who is a bit more of a traditional best friend. Due to this she has a different relationship with each member of the team, which allows for tons of great interactions, that range from humorous, to dramatic, to even just plain sweet.

Usagi is also one of the most human characters I have ever seen, despite her pretty much acceding to being a god. She has her strengths, such as her kind nature and her vast power, her weaknesses such as being a ditsy crybaby, and many notable traits and interests. She loves video games, boys, manga, anime. She is not even close to being a bland heroine some people think she is due to the old dub. She is a fully fleshed out and interesting character. Her development was a gradual change over the course of the 3-years that the events of the series take place. Due to that it makes each change in her personality over time feel like growth instead of just alterations to a character being passed off as development. No, instead she slowly but surly matures and grows out of being a crybaby, becoming a brave individual, and while still not the brightest, she is notably smarter at the end of the series. I feel one of the biggest reasons Usagi is such a beloved character is for her development. She grew at a real pace, that makes her come off as a real human being instead of some all powerful heroine that can do anything. Yes, she does technically have that power at the end of the series, but here's the thing. She is a character first, and an all powerful goddess second. That is why Usagi is one of my favorite characters. A wonderful mix of being interesting and lovable, while also still managing to make her one of the most powerful users of magic in all of fiction. No matter how powerful a character is, if they don't have a personality just as engaging as they are powerful, then they fail as a character. Usagi is a complex, well developed character, who has tons of lovability in the forms of both strengths and weaknesses, making her a great role model and icon in the anime industry. No magical girl has really measured up to her, and I really doubt any will. She set the standard and redefined the genera for a reason. Her personality is very believable, one you could actually see a person be like. That's why she is one of my all time favorite characters.

Speaking of Sailor Moon, there is one special ability that she only used twice in the whole series, and that was the Supersonic Waves, used in episode 1, "Crybaby Usagi's Magnificent Transformation" (a.k.a. "A Moon Star Is Born"), and episode 153 "A Dentist of Terror" Palla-Palla's House" (a.k.a. "Dental Dilemma"). Anyway, being a crybaby did have its advantages.

I really need to see the Viz Media dub of the show.
