Harmony

They sat with their hands laced together just silently watching the sun go down.
Twilight and dawn were their favorite times of day. It was the time that night danced into day and day bleed into night. This was the time when their bending was level with each other. The time when they were completely at balance.

Zuko took his other hand and placed it tenderly on his wife’s womb. There, in her body, was the result of their love. It was their child, the balance made manifest in one being. That was what he was.

Katara smiled. The creation of that child had been beautiful. They had conceived at twilight, when the world seemed to be at peace, and balance hung in the air. At the end, as they exploded into each other, a single firefly came floating by, as if a good omen.

Then there, at that same location where they were seated, cut off from the world in private unity with the earth. A firefly came floating by. Katara saw it, and then… pain.

It was time…

“Zu… ko…” she gasped. “The baby… it’s coming…”

Zuko looked at her in horror. Here? NOW? He got to his feat knowing full well that she was early and that usually was not a good sign. He scoped her up with little difficulty. She may weight more then she usually did, but Zuko was a trained Fire Bender. He was strong and fully capable of doing such things as lifting his pregnant wife.

He then proceeded to run down the hill with caution. It took all his skill at bending, and all his martial arts training to remain balanced and not to jar her. It was a good thing he started working on some water bender movement principals, which flowed much better than he would normally have been able.

They got to the house and he found Katara being taken from his arms and herded into the tiny room where she would be giving birth. It was not a fire nation custom for the men to witness this, even though he continually demanded to be by her side. His little ‘reassurance nurse’ went in and out of the room to give him a play by play of what was happening.

Zuko was not pleased.

Hours past and he waited for the signal that he could enter into the room. It was bad luck to enter before the baby cried… Then there it was. Floating in the place a simple firefly, going on it’s way down the dimly lit hallway. It paused and Zuko held out his finger. The firefly landed on it for a moment, and then flew away. Right when it landed Zuko felt at piece. Right when it left, Zuko heard his baby cry. He rushed in the room, past the nurse who had been on her way to allow him in.

There was Katara, smiling at him, then at the baby. The baby girl that they then named, Harmony.
